Postpartum hairloss still going on after 18 months - this doesn't seem normal?

I experienced a lot of hair loss some weeks after giving birth which lasted a few months - pretty standard stuff. All calmed down, started regrowing. After I finished breastfeeding / periods returned when baby about 12 months it seemed to kick off again. I'm now 18 months postpartum and I am still losing excessive amounts of hair.

I have very thick hair so it's not noticeable, but it concerning me a bit as I'm wondering what the underlying cause could be.

I feel fine, look fine - not run down, no more tired than you'd expect, doing plenty of exercise - really no other symptoms other than the hair loss. I did think about iron or thyroid but I don't think I have the other symptoms you'd expect.

Strangely when I lost hair initially postpartum it was all from round my crown, whereas now it's all coming out round the back of my head.

I think post partum hair loss is like male pattern baldness and around the crown. Other things like thyroid are diffuse. If you were / are bf you need more vit d so it could be worth checking, and always worth checking thyroid if post partum. If patchy I wonder if it's a type of alopecia?

Not unreasonable to check with GP though.

Thyroid and anaemia most likely suspects.

YY to GP visit for bloods. I'm currently waiting on my results but GP says he took them to check potential iron deficiency and thyroid function.

Did you ever resolve this Plateofcrumbs? I'm experiencing the same exact thing!!! My son is 16 months old. Had severe postpartum hair loss around my temples, but it went back to normal after a couple of months. I stopped nursing three months ago and since then it's come back, except this time it's diffuse. My thyroid and Vitamin D levels came back normal. Any help would be appreciated!

Get ferritin levels checked, it's the iron stores.

I had the same experience! After I had my baby my hair started falling out like crazy. After many doctor visits and tests, he recommended that I use a natural shampoo, because my post-baby body was now not having a good reaction to the chemicals in shampoos. He recommended the Made from Earth Tea & Protein Shampoo, because its all natural, and has proteins in it.

After about one week, I could see my hair getting stronger and filling out more. It has stopped falling out now. You will need a condtioner after using this shampoo, because it does make your hair like squeaky clean (from the tea tree oil), but its worth it because you get your hair back!

MMbed655, can you tell me where to get that shampoo from? I’m going through the same issue. I’ve tried google but it’s only US sites that are coming up as selling it. x

I know all too well about hair loss post partem I ended up with bald spots on either side of my head near the front. Looked like a bad job at a death hawk lol. have a look at mastoorabeauty.com they have a hair loss cream called anti fall which i have used and it stopped my hair loss within a week. Now my hair is growing really fast in those spots so I'm putting it all over my head.
