Recalled after mammogram for U/S?

Hi

Is this quite normal? I had a mammogram a few weeks ago. Got a letter and appointment through saying "the mammogram showed something that needs further evaluation" and a date and time for an ultrasound.

Is this quite common? To have an U/S following a mammogram? I am 41 and have pretty small breasts (34B) if that makes any difference - was I difficukt to mammogram?

Thanks

Was it a screening mammogram?
I cant remember the figures, but of all the people who go for screening, a small portion get recalled for further pictures. Of these, a small portion get called for perhaps a biopsy and appointment with a doctor. Some of these are discharged, some have something going on. So, I wouldn't get too worried about an initial recall.

Ps its not all about size

Thank you very much for reassurance.

Yes, screening, I think. I saw a Consultant because I was concerned by "lumpiness" and my mum's current Breast cancer (sort of "focusses concerns"). Consultant could not feel a distinct lump, but referred me for a mammogram anyway.

Found the figures - >80% of people recalled from screening are not found to have anything of concern and are discharged.

Thats not really screening then if you went with symptoms, so those figures dont apply, but it's still too early to say whether the thing they spotted on the mammogram is anything to worry about. Its very common to further evaluate any spots or shadows with an ultrasound and maybe a biopsy. Hopefully you'll get the results back soon.

I was recalled from first routine screening. It was due to just a small cyst and they got rid of it there and then, nothing to worry about.

I was recalled following first routine screening, I got the all clear they just had nothing to compare it to so needed ultra sound to be sure. Fingers crossed for you. Flowers

I was recalled and went for my appt today.

It turned out to be cyst and they drained it straight away- which was totally painless.

The staff were lovely, a nurse first told me straightaway that they suspected a cyst but wanted to do a scan as a scan is much more detailed.

hope all goes well with you and you don't have too long to wait.

If it was the normal screening type mammogram, ie one squash sideways and one squash vertically, then you are probably as likely to be called back as a normal screening. They can only tell so much from them, but they give a good overall idea of what is going on, and if more attention is needed.

In the clinic, they can do any (and many!) angle(s) so that they can see what they are looking for, and tell you straight away. Then follow it up with ultrasound.

Often, it is just layers of tissue that overlap - more likely when you are younger.

Hi, sorry to hear you are worried by the recall. i had one on my last screening, thought nothing more about it until I actually got there, and found myself directed to a different part of the usual clinic, in a waiting room with other people who mostly had someone with them and were clearly in some distress.

It turned out to be 'nothing that needed investigation' but for those few minutes in the waiting room, my imagination was on fire. I wanted you to be warned that, at least in our clinic, all the recalls are dealt with in the same area, in a different part of the clinic to the screening area and that this of itself does not mean anything other than that you have been recalled. Hope it goes well for you.

Thank you everyone. U/S was all clear. The mammogram noted "denser glandular tissue on the right Breast"'(which was worrying me - bumpiness) - so that is what they wanted to check out.

I had that too, only it had gone completely by the time I went back.
