Weeing after laparoscopy

So I had my laparoscopy this morning and I'm back home now and I feel surprisingly fine bar a bit of a wee issue. I needed to go shortly after I came round from my op when i was returned to the ward but the nurses wouldn't let me out of bed so I had to use a bedpan. I was pretty desperate but the first time round I just could NOT get started if you know what I mean. It was pretty distressing tbh :/ Five minutes later I was able to wee but the next couple of times I went before leaving (having been drinking water) it took a while for the flow to start. The nurse told me it was normal but I wans't aware this could happen. Fellow MNers who've had a lap, did this happen to you?

Yes! After my laparoscopy I couldnt wee for ages despite feeling desperate. Came out of surgery at 4 pm and by 9am still couldn't wee. They said they would give me an hour and then catheterise me, oh the pressure! I sat on the loo for ages before a tiny amount squeezed out!
I think the anaesthetic and all the poking about numbs your bladder! I'm sure you will be fine very soon.

Yes, have had several laps and it happened to me every time. Has happened after GA for foot surgery too. For me it gets back to normal pretty quickly. Hope your recovery goes well!

addicted2cake: so you went 15 hours without being able to wee?! Shock that is awful, I barely lasted 15 minutes!!!

Until yesterday it had been almost 10 years since my last GA so I couldn't remember the side effects I had from that and I didn't really find anything on the whole having trouble weeing after a GA when I was researching side effects beforehand. It's better now though, by about 9.30pm last night I was able to start going to the loo properly although I feel like I can't quite empty everything and I don't want to strain my abdominal stitches at all. Apart from that I'm doing well, no shoulder pain and I only just took my first lot of painkillers about and hour ago Smile
