On the news this morning they said a rash on the face can signal a milk allergy

dd3 has a permanent spotty red rash around her mouth and chin since cutting down bfeeding and drinking more formula (and eating stuff with cows milk in)

I had put it down to getting food all over her face - could I be wrong?

Maybe but there are 1001 possible causes for any rash. So I wouldn't leap to any conclusions esp. as milk such a good source of nutrients for babies. Ask GP/HV?

cut out milk for a week and see if it continues

more likely to be something she'll grow out of

DD was like that with egg .. used to get big blotchy rash as soon as the slightest bit touched her

grew out of it at about 2 years old and loves eggs in all shape and form now

there was also an article about much milk allergy problems are over diagnosed!

I dunno enid - it's so hard to tell when they're that age because there are so many new foods that they are having. Ds has always had a sort of spotty rash round his mouth and I always put it down to him being a very mucky eater (and always having food on his face). It could just as easily be something like tomato.

Might be worth showing it to the GP to see what they say.

dd2 gets this; gets it under her eyes too

i put a bit of vaseline on and that helped

she has ezcema and that's what the hv suggested

she's having milk. I'm sorry. I toss about with enough special needs baloney to start sourcing yak products on top of it all

Enid - cut out all dairy produce and use soya/goats milk based ones instead. You need to do it for at least 2 weeks.

If you are giving her b/milk still, then it really doesnt matter about nutrients etc atm.

If you are giving her a variety of solids, again - it doesnt matter either.

Its a bit of a myth that cows milk is the best source of calcium etc....

doesnt soya formula really muck them up though?

Oh yes, have just seen that study about 2 minutes ago!

I dont know enough about it atm. Certainly excluding cows milk products is not harmful.

my baby has a severe dairy allergy which was apparent by 3 weeks. I like my cheese and was scoffing all foods, and breast feeding. bubby was very unsettled, projectile vomit, couldn't lay down to sleep and constant diahorrea. Health services were useless, tryed to tell me everything was normal with my baby cos she was putting on weight and that baby's just cry and are sick alot, then they tried to suggest that I had PND and just wasn't coping with having a baby! By 10 weeks bubby had streaks of blood in her poo, we took her back to gp who said it was nothing, by now we were really worried, looked on internet and came up with research on allergies, sickness, blood in poo etc. After a month of blood in poo went back to gp who finally said she would refer to pediatrician if I brought in samples of poo, as she didnt want to look bad if it was nothing!
We brought samples in and at the same time I took matters into my own hands and went on exclusion diet, 2 days without dairy and the blood and the sickness stopped. By the time of pediatric appointment bubby was thriving, pediatrician agreed sounded like allergy, very common and they will blood test her at a year old and that Majority of babies grow out of it by time they are five, but I cant breast feed that long!
I hope that GPs and health visitors take the new info on board and save mums and babies lots of pain and worry.
