I'm starting to build a great social life for myself and have been going out to events/dinners ect for the last few months, but three times in the last two weeks I've been sick with drink. One night we had 5 bottles of wine with a friend, the next night 6 vodkas and two ciders. I feel awful the next day and have quite a serious on going health condition.

Yes, you are drinking too much
You can go out, be sociable & have fun without drinking to the point of throwing up

You feel awful the next day because you are drinking too much.

5 bottles of wine between how many people? I'd say you probably are (and know that already!). I'm often surprised at how much is too much. It's less than you think.

I always end up in rounds with people or buying bottles of wine x

Lipgloss74 Sun 14-Jun-15 20:32:44

Between 2 hmm

Good grief! That is an awful lot!

Wolfiefan Sun 14-Jun-15 20:35:38

A couple of units a day is ok. (But I would want several nights off from drinking.)
2 and a half bottles each? Isn't a bottle about 9 units? So over 20 units. Shit. That's bad.

Lipgloss74 Sun 14-Jun-15 20:38:29

Yes I know it is, I just do t know how to go out and not drink too much or get involved in rounds ect-help. X

2.5 bottles of wine per person! That is 25 units of alcohol. 8 units of alcohol is binge drinking for a women.

I think with that much alcohol I would end up in hospital.

Bunbaker Sun 14-Jun-15 20:42:17

You already know the answer otherwise you wouldn't be posting on here.

Two and a half bottles of wine for one person in one evening is way, way too much. There are approximately 9 units of alcohol in one bottle of wine so 2 1/2 bottles represents about 22 units of alcohol. Given that the maximum weekly recommended number of units for women is 14 units you will be seriously endangering your health if you carry on drinking like that.

Just duck out of rounds and say that you are buying for yourself only. Or alternate drinks with soft drinks. It isn't a rule that you have to drink to keep up with everyone else.

Wolfiefan Sun 14-Jun-15 20:44:29

Don't understand how you can't avoid this. It's like a person who has an affair and says "it just happened". You have lifted the glass and put it to your face! Alternate soft and alcoholic drinks? Say no thank you? Offer to be the designated driver?
Or prepare for possible liver failure.

I'm finding that I am spending way more than I can afford and trying to almost keep up with other people.
I am very soft at times but for several reasons I need to grow a pair and enjoy going out without getting hammered.
I don't drive but might stop taking my bank card out with me and setting a spending limit.
I was a big drinker years ago and cut right down so I can do it again.
I worry as both sets of grandparents were alcoholics and my dads a big social drinker.
What's your drinking habits?

Whichseason Sun 14-Jun-15 20:48:32

Next time you are out say I am going to stay out of rounds becuase I am trying to save money/can't keep up/ trying to get fit/busy in the morning.

paxtecum Sun 14-Jun-15 20:50:15

If you already have a serious health condition then you shouldn't be drinking more than one unit per week.

Can you not just drink orange juice or sparking water.
Don't drink shite like diet coke.

You are making yourself more ill.

Whichseason Sun 14-Jun-15 20:50:39

I would drink a bottle of wine max. This week end I have drank three nights in a row but less than 3 units each night. I normally drink every other weekend and normally less than the equilivant of a bottle of wine.

Wolfiefan Sun 14-Jun-15 20:51:02

I drink a bottle of wine over the course of a weekend. I then have a couple of days off before maybe a couple more units (eg a beer) in the middle of the week.
Any more than a couple of units isn't good for me. I like to have more days in the week alcohol free than drinking.

Whichseason Sun 14-Jun-15 20:52:01

What is your health condition?

Lipgloss74 Sun 14-Jun-15 20:53:06

Should I just bite the bullet and send a text to my buddies explaining that I love going out with them but due to my health/financial situation I am opting out of wine binges and over drinking??

Cancookdontcook Sun 14-Jun-15 20:56:44

When I go out with friends, I just say it's ok, I'll get mine and no one seems to mind if I don't go in a round.

In a round you have to keep up with the others. Plus as you say it costs you a fortune.

Pick a drink other than wine that others don't drink and go at your own pace. Decide how many you are going to have eg two or three and only take out enough money for that.

Bunbaker Sun 14-Jun-15 20:58:39

I drink, but not as much as you. OH was away last weekend and I opened a bottle of wine on Friday. I finished it on Monday.

You clearly realise what the issue is, so put your words into practice.
1) Don't try and keep up with the others.
2) Don't take your debit card out with you and only take a set amount of money.

Wolfiefan Sun 14-Jun-15 20:59:55

It's not up to your friends. It's up to you. You should be able to go out and not drink to excess. If you can't then stop drinking.

I know all this just need to have someone else tell me.
I got followed home for a bit last night while hammered- a real sobering experience x
