Hi
I had a barium swallow in feb after a failed endoscoy in jan. Dr said results normal.
My symptoms are no better and I am booked for another endoscopy next week.
My question is...how likely is it that the barium swallow missed something?
The dr wants to take a biopsy to test for coeliac if he can (the sedation didn't work last time sad)
I am very very nervous after what happened last time sad

What are your symptoms?

Badvocinapeartree Thu 04-Dec-14 18:03:23

Gerd and epigastric pain.
Had gastritis in jan after a gallbladder op in nov.
At least they think it was gastritis - they don't actually know as didn't have the endoscopy.

Ave you been tested for Hpylori?

Badvocinapeartree Thu 04-Dec-14 19:26:42

A few years go (5?) yes.
It was negative.
No idea if it can suddenly become positive?
My dad had it.

Sorry have even!

Yes it can definitely be positive after a negative result. It's just bacteria, some people have it and never know but if they were tested it would be positive and other people have symptoms like upper abdominal pain ( like a gnawing pain ) feeling faint, sometimes bloating. It's reckoned that the majority of ulcers are caused by this.

I've had it twice 10 years apart. Both times had stomach symptoms. Left untreated can be a link to stomach cancer, my mum died of that so I'm pretty paranoid about Hpylori, I have a stool test every year to make sure I'm clear.

Maybe worth asking your GP.

I am going in to have the endoscopy - hopefully ! - next Friday.
The dr plans to take biopsies for coeliac (my mum has it) and h pylori I imagine, but I will ask him.
Just hope I manage to cope with it this time sad
I think back in jan they were worried about an ulcer and they put me on one parasols for 2 weeks but as I understand it if I do, I need ABs?
Is that right?
I'm very sorry about your mum x

Badvocinapeartree Thu 04-Dec-14 19:46:07

I thought the h pylori test was a breath test!?
That's what I had anyway...

everlong Thu 04-Dec-14 19:54:19

Are you having sedation for your endoscopy?

A stool sample is the more effective for a clear result, it was a blood test when I had it done 11 years ago but when I went back last year they said it was now a stool test. The breath test is done to see if you're still positive after a short period ( or so I was told ) I've never had one.

The medication for eradication is a triple antibiotic treatment that rids the infection, it's quite brutal but has worked both times.

I'm allergic to pencillin!
<why is nothing simple!?>

Badvocinapeartree Thu 04-Dec-14 20:01:25

I am having sedation!
I have asked for horse tranquilliser!
smile
No idea why it didn't work last time sad
I had midazolam.
But it had no/minimal effect on me.
So I am pretty anxious.
Am having this one at a private hospital though, not NHS.
No idea if that means the sensation will be better?
<am covered under Dhs work insurance>

everlong Thu 04-Dec-14 20:35:33

I've had it done once on nhs without sedation and once private with and the consultant looked like Penfold of DangerMouse first time horrendous, never again without sedation. But with sedation it was quite pleasant.
I know that sounds mad but it was. You will be all woozy and then it's over. Promise smile

Badvocinapeartree Thu 04-Dec-14 20:45:40

My dr doesn't look like penfold grin
I just want it to be over

everlong Thu 04-Dec-14 20:51:03

It will before you know it. Hope it gives you some answers too.

Badvocinapeartree Thu 04-Dec-14 20:52:59

Thank you x
