Lots of blisters in mouth

Hi, hoping someone will have experience of this. Might be a bit long as have been to Dr already but she isn't sure what it is.

About 10 days ago, following a cough and sore throat thing, my mouth started to feel as if it was burning.

One week ago, so last Monday, by which time I was having difficulty eating as it hurt too much I went to the GP who thought it might be thrush, so prescribed something for that. At this point the only visible thing wrong was the tip of the tongue looking red raw and a little blistered, as if I had burned it. There was also a bad taste.

By Wednesday there were blisters on the roof of my mouth, all over my tongue, and on the inside of the cheeks. By Thursday there were blisters on my lips as well.

On Friday I went back to the doctor, who suggested herpangina or possibly herpes, ie coldsores. No experience of either. She said it was weird, as normally only children or really ill people (ie with immunity problems) would react like that, and prescribed anti-virals (zellitrex) and gave me an anaesthetising gel, and told me to stop taking the medication for thrush. Said if no better by today then to go back and she will refer me to a specialist.

Over the weekend I have been able to eat a little but it is still spreading. I have well over 100 blisters at various stages and it hurts so much. It is messing with my sleep, food intake of course, though I am drinking masses of water. Morale is vvv low.

Does anyone have any experience of this? How long did it last? I am going to go back to the Dr tomorrow, though I am not sure she can do anything in particular, other than refer. I am not sure a referral is necessary though if it is just a virus like coldsores. I recently had the usual run of blood tests and they were clear of everything. I assume immunity would be picked up in them.

You could try the herpes association? Are you gargling with salt water? It sounds like it, but a swab would confirm it.

Could it be a really bad case of hand, foot & mouth?
My DD and then I both had this a few years ago, and only had blisters in our mouths / on our lips. They were pretty painful and prevented proper eating.
It didn't go on for as long as you though.

Whatever it is, it sounds miserable and I really hope you're feeling better soon.

I hope it is just that (herpes) - that will end up disappearing, right? I know a lot of people get coldsores on their lips which come back occasionally - will mine come back everywhere like this every time? Will I get 20 on my lips as I currently have 20 or so tiny blisters on my lips? (Am feeling spectacularly attractive atm :o )

I will try and gargle with salt water - someone suggested it last week but I thought that sounded really really painful. Does it really help? Thank you for the

If it is hfm then it's paracetamol. Fd at 3 didn't get anything else. It's pretty contagious so watch out for family.

Forgot about that one. Lasted about 2 wks I think. NHS direct will say more...

HF&M has been suggested too, or herpangina which is similar, but just the mouth. LO had blisters a few weeks ago that could have been that or could have been coldsores, Dr wasn't sure, but they cleared up within a week. She was fine in herself and just a bit picky with food. There were far fewer blisters too, maybe about 10 in total including in her mouth and on her lips.

My first thought was hand, foot and mouth too.

Do you have any red spots/rash elsewhere on your body (palms, soles of feet and sometimes groin/bum area?), not sure if it presents the same in adults as children.

Try to eat cool things (plain yoghurt is good) and avoid high salt/sugar and anything too acidic.

Does anyone with this/ who has had it have an awful taste in their mouth? And bad breath? DH really cheered me up the other day by telling me my breath stank. Feel like a million dollars :)

(It doesn't usually).

No rash elsewhere. LO didn't either when she had whatever it was a few weeks ago.

Well if it's herpes then I'm afraid you always have it, reoccurrence isn't as bad as first break out usually. For up to date info that doesn't scare you I really recommend the herpes assoc

I have this too - though not as bad and coming to the end of it now. I'm sure mine is htm. Not much to be done other than paracetamol, ibuprofen and bonjela. Sympathies, it's horrid I know.

It's just over a week since the blisters/ ulcers started but I'd been feeling under the weather for about 4 days before that - brief fever, sore throat, cold-like symptoms. I had the burnt tongue sensation for a few days as well. A bit worried that it has now turned into an ear/ throat infection, may be back to the gp tomorrow.

I had this in cycles after a virus last year. I do have a crazy immune system though. Steroids, colchicine and actual dissolvable steroids on the sores helped me. Even now if I get a cold a few days after it I will get varying degrees of these sores/ulcers. Never as bad but always scares me. My official diagnosis is pretty rare (PFAPA) but it I sort of treat it as a post viral thing

PS mine presented v similarly - whole tongue felt burnt then ulcers on tongue, cheeks, throat and inside of lips. At its peak I got a massive one under my tongue that lasted about ten days, and that area still get sore now when I've had a virus. Crazy eh? Hope it gets better OP
