What gets rid of your bad headaches?

Since starting my new job I have been suffering really debilitating headaches-I've only ever had headaches this bad before once or twice when pregnant but I'm getting one virtually every week. It starts at the side one temple and then speeds across my skull and my whole head is pounding and I feel sick. Paracetemol and ibuprofen don't touch it and when I eventually fall asleep that night, I find it's still there in the morning!

Is there anything else I can try?

I find that upping my intake of water and getting more fresh air help. Self-diagnosis of my headaches led me to notice that I seldom get them in summer so this is the action I take, along with a couple of paracetemol. Strangely, being constipated also seems to make matters worse!

If you haven't had your eyes tested since you started your new job this might be a good idea. (It looks as though your employer should pay for the test if you're working on a computer www.hse.gov.uk/msd/faq-dse.htm )

I do drink plenty of water but maybe don't get enough fresh air on the days that I work. I'll have to try opening a few windows at work!

I spoke to the pharmacist today and asked after Migraleve. She said it was good but gave me some cocodamol to try first. She also said there was something very strong-Imigran, I think, that I could try if nothing else works but it was about £8 for two tablets!

Has anyone else had any success?

Migralieve is so good! I take the pink ones which take the nauseous feeling away too. Literally the only thing that works for me

Have you tried Nurofen Plus? I get a lot of migraines and headaches and it works for me most of the time.

Consider your posture when sitting at your pc. Are you craning your neck? Is the floor level?

Thank you for the replies-I will get some Nurofen plus; what's in them that's different from the normal Nurofen?

I'm not using a pc at work really, fusspot66-I'm a teacher, so although I have one which I use on and off during the day, I don't think that's the root of the problem.

Nurofen Plus has codeine and ibuprofen whereas Nurofen is just ibuprofen. I swear by them

Ibuprofen with Lysine shifts my tension headaches. Asda do one and nurofen too

Solpadine Max and nurofen alternate every couple of hours. Have to rake them a soon as I feel it starting though.

I will have to try the one with lysine as well. Isn't codeine addictive? Presumably you use it for a day or two whilst your headache is going but then stop so it's safe?!

I had a headache the other day and dh lifted me up in a sort of bear hug and cracked my back for me. It completely disappeared. Not long had a cs so what with pg and surgery I haven't been able to get my spine crunched for a while.

I can get terrible headaches from fluorescent lights and some long life light bulbs. Could that be the problem? Something to do with the imperceptible flicker.

When I go into some shops for any length of time,Tesco etc, I have to wear a baseball cap to stop the light directly hitting my eyes. I realise that a baseball cap is not a great solution if you are a teacher though

Water, sleep, limit screen time. When the pain hits, take pill of choice and wolf down coke zero and a Mars bar. Idk why this works for me but it does, every time! I hardly drink any caffeine otherwise.

I think the cocodomal the chemist gave me had caffeine in actually!

Immigrants works for me, as does tea and having the window open
There is also a Nurofen migraine or something, sorry can't remember what it is called, but that was good too.
A colleague swears by solpadol too.

As a teacher I can sympathise! Cocodamol and carbs for me. I find the less healthy the food, the better, I.e. Chips, white bread, bacon etc work wonders!

It does sound a bit like a migraine. I get them often too. You can get really good drugs from your gp, mine are amazing. I do always eat chips after a migraine too, didn't really twig it was a migraine thing till I just read the above post

If you get lots of headaches then you should avoid codeine because it can cause headaches. If you google medication overuse headache you'll find more information

I don't actually get lots of headaches-they have just been starting at work every week on a particular day since I've started my new job. I think the best solution would be to give up work and never work ever again, but I don't think that's a viable option! I've never tried codeine before, so am going to give it a go.
