Ultrasound showed lump on thyroid.

I've just been for a routine mammogram followed by an ultrasound due to dense breast tissue. The doctor also scanned the front of my neck and has said there is a lump on the thyroid gland and that I should have further tests. I don't want to google and the letter I have for my doctor is sealed! Anyone have any experience of this or any idea what to expect?

Can offer any advice hopefully someone else with experience will chime in soon. But what I would say is if you want to know what the letter says just open it. It's about you and you have a right to know.

The gp wrote a letter about my son today for me to take him up to the childrens ward as he is ill. The letter was sealed and I opened it before I went up and rightly so I wanted to read what it said about my child. X

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. DH said to open it but I'm in two minds about it for some reason. I'm overseas in another European country and know that it will be written in the language of this country and I'm not that fluent and don't want to misinterpret what it says. I'm just a bit thrown really as I am 50 and in the peri menopause so in the process of well woman type checks...didn't for one minute suspect there may be a snag with my thyroid! I hope your son is receiving the treatment he needs and is recovering. X

I have same, had a biopsy on the lump and am waiting for result, an outpatient appt on sept 1st. In most cases it is harmless cysts but can very rarely be something more sinister.. My gp told me not to worry butch lump lump first came to my notice in June. Waiting for an appointment on the NHL is long.......

Cherry, I'd open it too. If it's in German you can pm me if you want a translation.

I had a lump on my thyroid years ago, it was my thyroid being underactive and producing lots of cells to make up for it. I had my thyroid out, and after being on the right dose of thyroxine, my life was very different. All sorts of problems I put down to having small dc vanished: hair problems, constant exhaustion, etc.

Your lump has a very high likelyhood of being benign, and the letter probably only tells the other doc to refer you to an endocrinologist for a check up with another scan and bloods.
Very thorough doc you have there!

I can't feel any lump but not too sure why he scanned there anyway when I was there for a mammogram. Thanks Cinnamon but not German it's Spanish. Vicki did you have symptoms to warrant a biopsy? I have an appointment on Monday with my Gynaecologist for a bone density scan and the letter is for her so not long to wait.

Yes I have a small visible lump at the bottom of my neck, went to gp about it and was referred to hospital. It is the endless waiting that is getting me down, not knowing

I know it must be so difficult but you are in the best possible hands. You will get the treatment that is needed. I am a medical professional myself but at the moment I want to be oblivious.

I had a lump on my thyroid, had a number of ultrasounds and biopsies, then ended up having it removed. Was totally benign!

I expect that will be the case with me paddy. Did they remove only the lump or the thyroid too?

I had a lump on my thyroid a few years ago and at the time I worried myself stupid. Turned out I had bled into a cyst and it was completely benign. Caused no problems since either. You'll be fine.

They removed half of my thyroid - was a relatively easy op done as a day case. The consultant did give me the option of continuing to watch it and biopsy it, but I wanted it gone!

I had scan in April, they found 18mm nodule on thyroid and several small cysts. I was rescanned in July, nodule had shrunk 2mm. Something like 85% of these nodules are benign. I'm not sure what they are planning to do next.

Thanks again for all the replies. I suspect this is a benign nodule but I suppose they will need to check it out with a few tests to be certain.

Good luck I had something similar and it was diagnosed as Branchial cleft. They just syringed the cyst and took biopsy and no further treatment needed they were talking about removing but thankfully there was no need.
