Does this sound like IBS or not? (Warning - disgusting & TMI)

Last Friday my gut started really rumbling (like it was going too fast iyswim) and I started passing loads of globs of mucous out of my bum. Felt completely fine in myself - thought it was just an odd thing.

It carried on and when I went to work on Monday there was so much coming out (it's hard to be completely continent of it) I ended up having to get changed Blush. Loads of globs and strings of it. My poo remained normal but had to go to the loo loads of times to pass the mucous.

Rang GP for advice. He said he'd "never heard anything like it" and to send a stool sample. Which I did. Although there was no stool in it, just the browny/yellow jelly-slime stuff.

I'm waiting for the results of the sample. But now have developed diarrheoa over the past 3 days. Have lost about 4 pounds in weight this past week as no appetite now. No fever. Just loads and loads of trips to the loo with mucous and now diarrheoa. Urgency.

I guess it sounds like IBS but never had issues before? Can it just come on like that? I'm not particularly stressed right now....

That has to be the most disgusting thing I think I've ever typed. Would appreciate any advice....

you are not disgusting, you are unwellSmile

could be ibs, could be a bowel condition like colitis or an infection of some sort. If it persists you may need it investigating further.

Any recent foreign travel or eating out anywhere suspicious?

Not a medical professional but emember having a conversation with a friend about this very thing and her doctor had said it was quite common with IBS as when the intestine is irritated it stimulates it to produce excess mucus which is then passed much as you describe.

because of the weight loss I would get to the gp and ask to be referred.

Many years ago I had something a bit like it. It turned out to be food poisoning. I did a sample and the GP had to label it as poo because it looked more like wee.

I have ulcerative colitis and have exactly the symptons you describe, among others.

GP diagnosed after a quick examination but I did need a sigmoidoscopy to confirm.

sudden onset of change in bowel habit, and passing of copious amounts of mucus does not sound like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), no.

i would guess that you may either have an infection (although as your symptoms have been going on for 2 weeks now, that becomes rather less likely), or you have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

IBS and IBD are very different conditions, not to be confused.

you should see a doctor; at a minimum, your GP - and i would have thought it very likely that he/she will refer you to either a gastroenterologist, or a colo-rectal surgeon, to be properly assessed.

don't ignore this - passing mucus per rectum is never normal, and needs proper investigation.

Thank you all. And no, no foreign travel chance would be a fine thing and not eaten anything different to rest of the family.
I'll wait until the stool sample is back then and wait to see gp...
The things that's puzzling me is that I don't really feel 'ill'. Just no appetite and the 'bum issues'

I had the same symptoms when I had gastroenteritis. It took 2 weeks to clear up in my case =/

Demand a colonoscopy. There are so many different diseases that are bowel related and you should get diagnosed as soon as you can. I have family history of bowel disease, and 8 years ago started to be unwell. Went straight to the GP and was referred to a specialist. Diagnosed with mild Crohn's disease, which was not a surprise. Knowledge is power, once you know what it is you can take steps to work out what to do. It could absolutely be an isolated incident, but please get it checked out!! Good luck x

Please ask to be referred - any changes in bowel habits should be investigated and mucus is a symptom of IBD (Crohns or Colitis). There's a good chance it's nothing serious but it's best to know. I've got Crohns but it took years for me to be taken seriously and get a proper diagnosis.

Have you had antibiotics for anything recently?

Or take lansoprazole or omeprazole daily?

We have several people with IBS in our family.

My daughter's poo was like that for ages. DH reported similar.

For DD we discovered by trial and error that no wheat, no dairy = no IBS.
For other family members no wheat is enough to fix it.

Some were like this from childhood, most started in adulthood (30s usually).

I'd get referred to be sure.

yes, for an urgent one??
my symptoms are
central low /abdo bowel pain
mucus (which has now become bloody)
weight loss
fever off and on
my mum has colitis

my symptoms started after strong anti biotics and omperazole.
i few doctors have said that clarithromycin might have started it but they wouldnt expect the symptoms to last this long - 4 months
i took omperazole for 8 weeks after the anti biotics ,which helped with what they were prescribed for but i think they made my bowel worse.
