I've had a raging cold and bad chest for about 3 weeks thanks to the darling children who keep bringing it home from school and nursery. On Monday my ear felt really sore, by Tuesday it was sheer agony and I couldn't hear or balance properly. I somehow managed to drive to GP who said its the worst ear infection he's seen. He's prescribed antibiotics and strong painkillers and since then I've been bedridden. The pain has been horrific and goes all the way up the side of my head and face. I haven't been able to eat or even go for per by myself. I'm too dizzy to even sit up. For the last two days there has been a continuous stream of yellow gunk tinged with blood pouring out my ear. Thankfully this has slowed today. Thing is I have a nearly 5 months old baby who I am still breastfeeding!! Please tell me this will go away soon, or even that ill be able to get out of bed soon?? I'm starting to worry that the dizziness, sickness, and deafness won't go! Help Confused

Yuk you have my sympathy as I been plagued by ear probs all my life

I think you need to go back to the drs, or at least ring them. There's something they can give you for the dizziness and sickness. I used to have something called stemetil (sp?)
I would also have thought that the antibiotics should be relieving the symptoms by now. Your eardrum may have perforated.

Here are some Thanks I really feel for you.
Ring the drs now x

Thanks I've called the doctors (well my mum has!) and they are going to call me back. Feel awful :( If my ear drum is split can they do anything?

You have my heartfelt sympathies, an ear infection was the only thing that made me take to my bed when the children were small, it was horrific.

do you think the antibiotics are getting on top of the infection? if not then it may be an idea to phone doctors and let them know this, you might need something stronger. I seem to recall I ended up with AB ear drops, plus AB tablets which were very strong on my 3rd visit to Drs and they finally beat the infection.

I really feel for you, I've been hospitalised for IV antibiotics before with an ear infection!

It could be worth asking to be referred to ENT to have your ear vacuumed to get rid of the gunk, firstly it's a huge relief, and secondly it speeds the healing process

Just to update I've just got back from a 3 day stay in hospital! Bloody infection got much worse and a home visit from a GP saw me being whisked straight to hospital. The infection was in my middle ear and they thought it was starting to Tracy backwards into my brain which would require an operation. Thankfully IV antibiotics, super strong painkillers, steroids and ear drops has meant I avoided the CT scan and operation!!!

Who would have thought an ear infection could such a horrible illness!

Well done to your GP. DH of a friend had an eat infection track into his brain leading to three months in ITU and a very hideous recovery. These seemingly minor ilmenite can be very serious indeed.

Hope you are feeling much better.
