What are the rules please?
I'm fighting my second bout with Boots sachets of horrible stuff, cranberry juice drink, homeopathic cantheris(sp) pillules, water and peeing.
Also does it tend to make you feel crap and under the weather generally, because I am.

I found cranberry juice or cranberry tablets helped me, hope it's over soon, it's awful Sad I have been known to sleep on the toilet when it's really bad!!

Cranberry juice is good as a preventative but if you're using it during an attack it'll make it feel 10 times worse.

Plenty of water. When you go to the toilet wipe from front to back. Always pee after sex. If symptoms persist see your GP who'll do a dip test - If there's bacteria in your urine you'll need antibiotics.

Here are my tips:

  • Practise double voiding, where you finish wedding, get up wipe your bum etc then sit back down and get another few drips out
  • Pee before sex
  • wash before sex
  • pee after sex
  • wear cotton underwear
  • avoid g-strings
  • let air at your nethe regions as much as possible, ie no pants to bed
  • drink plenty of still water, ideally at room temperature
  • go light on the caffeine

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

Any opinions on baths versus showers and soap use in the genital area? Feel like the shower/as little soap as possible and then only on bum route seems wise but want a bath.

Cranberry juice drink is mostly sugar, and won't help, I don't think.

My daughter has recurring UTIs and we got rid of the last one with very concentrated cranberry tablets called Cysticlean (I think), other cranberry tablets, and probiotics (she has had antibiotics recently for UTIs). I absolutely COULD NOT believe that this regime worked, and I was so pleased. We took advice from someone who really seemed well informed who runs a good health food store.

My GP recommends ginger ale.
I also drink lemon barley water.

You can bath, just don't use any products like bath gel and keep the water warm not hot. Best thing is to add bicarbonate of soda.
Fo the shower, just warm water is plenty.

I wondered about the sugar in juice drinks. Too much sugar is meant to aggravate it. And wine. Sad

I don't know what "Boots sachets of horrible stuff" is so can't comment on that, but homeopathic whatever isn't going to work. You need urinary track antiseptic and antibiotic.

I used to get recurring cystitis. It was awful. Then a gynaecologist prescribed me an antibiotic treatment for the urinary track and the vagina and they just stopped.

In other words, don't faff around with sweetened weak fruit juices and woo. Get proper treatment.

Antibiotics (doxycycline) work wonders.

You need antibiotics my friend.

And to prevent further outbreaks - never, ever dehydrate. I drink litres of water each day, 'tis the only thing that keeps it at bay.

And yes, you will feel properly crap until you knock it on the head.

I feel for you, I really do.

I had a course of trimethaprine and took one every time I had sex. I was given about six months worth. It worked and after years and years of UTIs I was free Smile. Might be worth exploring if you get recurrent cystitis.

Morning.
Had antibiotics last time but thought unless it went to kidneys you could fight it off on your own? Doctor seemed to indicate antibiotics were not normally given.
Working today and don't know how I'm going to cope.

I always have to have ABs and as far as I know it's never actually reached my kidneys. Sometimes I have a day of needing to pee a lot with some discomfort, but usually I wake up in the morning and first pee is really painful. Second time I'm peeing blood, in agony. ABs all the way Sad

My "cure" is that at the first twinge, I run the bath and get in. Once out immediately into bed with a hot water bottle, and sleep/rest. If I can't get into bed a thick pair of tights for warmth (I have a summer pair, which I cut off just above the knees, so that my legs don't get too hot in a heatwave!!) Keeping the area warm goes against some of the other advice but works for me to fight off a dose, but only if I catch it really early.

I usually get bad attacks where the pee is literally opaque blood coloured. No way other than strong AB. It's usually a one off & doesn't recur. I've found that peeing before/after sex, peeing every 3-4 hours in the day & avoiding dehydration really help. But some people have recurring infections which could either indicate poor hygiene, not peeing enough, or immune deficiency where the bladder is unable to handle normal bacteria in the urine.

I'm about to go to the doctors for the 8th course of antibiotics in the space of a year. The lavatory is a sea of red, I feel like I am peeing razor blades and I don't know how I'm going to make it. I just want to moan and to sympathise with you OP.

Check your urine doesn't smell differently. You'll probably need anti biotics and a day off work. Hope you feel better soon.
