What other medical disciplines could deal with Mouth Ulcers?

KatyMac · 12/03/2014 22:02

I'm seeing Oral Health; earlier than expected as my routine appointment has been brought forward by the dentist after he saw my ulcers today (from July to the end of the month). I have about 9 at the moment & there are problems under my tongue.

But when I saw them last time they said they could do nothing as it was a virus or the menopause or stress or I was run down.

So if they still can't help, I was thinking of trying maybe:
Autoimmune (is that even a dept?)
Gastro (is that bowels?)
Allergy (maybe as antihistamines are helping)

I'm not really sure what other things to consider as we don't really do a "look at the whole of your body" doctor like in 'House'

Have they checked your vit B12 levels as low B12 can lead to persistent ulcers.

Dermatology? I was referred to them, they gave me soluble tablets to use as mouthwash, & recommended Oraldene mouthwash - it totally killed my sense of taste, but was otherwise very good.

I would suggest a nutrition therapist, but only a CNHC registered one.

The dentist said they had checked my vitamin levels

I have Beclametasome tablets as a mouthwash but I can't use Oraldene as it causes mouth ulcers

I am seeing a dietician - I guess that isn't the same

I get horrendous mouth ulcers - the size of my fingernails and sometimes down my throat.

Since I have stopped having toothpaste with sodium lauryl sulphate they have been much, much better. I also take b12 and zinc supplements which seem to help.

I use Green People toothpaste which you can get online and it has made it better - I hope yours improve too.

My exH used to suffer with mouth ulcers and they improved after stopping toothpaste containing SLS too.

Eat an egg a day, KatieMac. I'm sure I posted that before on an earlier thread. And sympathy.....

Do you have any other symptoms, mouth ulcers can be things like crohns disease?

Have you been to see your gp?

Report
KatyMac · 13/03/2014 06:52

I don't use sls toothpaste & I'm intolerant to eggs

Never heard of Pemphigold (I'll google)

I imagine they checked my iron when they didd the blood tests

I also have IBS/ME(CFS)/FM so I'm open to other diagosies.

Immunology - OK I can ask about that

I saw the hospital/consultant in Jan & they said they didn't know what was causing it & should just take the steroids.

Well I have since Jan almost without a break & despite taking them new ulcers have grown.

I'm having some success with anti-histamines but it's not consistent & my current crop (9 or so) have been arround for nearly 3 weeks

I've asked for my July appt at oral heath to be brought forward (it's in 2 weeks) & am seeing the GP but I wanted to go with suggestion about which department ot disapline we try next

Thanks for your suggestions everyone - I am taking them all on board I promise

I get them when I'm rundown. The worst I ever had was when I had glandular fever, so it could be related to your other medical history, in which case, getting all that sorted is probably your best bet. I hope you get some relief soon.

Are yo sure it's not the cold sore (Herpes Zoster) virus? I have had that just in my mouth and needed Zovirax tablets.
I have found there is nothing to touch Corsodyl mouthwash for ulcers. Further upthread...the word you are looking for is Pemphigus.
Try de acidifying your diet (a la Madonna) for a while, and maybe try the Hay diet for a while (which de acidifies anyway). Corsodyl first though but not for a prolonged time as it can stain your teeth, if you need it longer term try Eludryl (prob from a dentist?) Good luck.

My dad has pemphigoid, and is seen by dermatology - he was referred to them by the dental professor after having a biopsy taken of his ulcers.
He now sees the blister team and once a year a pemphigoid specialist from London does a clinic there

Agree with gastro. Thinking coeliac disease or similar.

Report
KatyMac · 13/03/2014 08:16

Oh it's not oradene I can't use it's Corsadyl!!

How would they know if it was cold sores?

I've been checked for coeliac but I still wonder about something gastro

I'll write down those words & take them with me - but it looks different I think

It could be to do with my other stuff - but I'm not sure who I'd see for them either

its an oral medicine department you want, have you a dental hospital nearby?

Report
KatyMac · 13/03/2014 08:26

Is that the same as Oral Health?

I don't think we have a dental hosp (Norfolk)

You said you've had a coeliac test - IBS symptoms and mouth ulcers both strong coeliac indicators. When were you checked and what test was done? False negatives are not uncommon, I would be wanting to get this looked at again. That would be a gastroenterologist.

If you are definitely NOT coeliac, then I would try a gluten-free and wheat-free diet, and see if that makes a difference. Non-coeliac gluten-sensitivity is an increasingly recognised medical issue. But important not to cut out gluten until all the coeliac tests complete.

My DS is coeliac and got a lot of mouth ulcers before he was diagnosed. Doesn't any more (unless he is accidentally glutened).

i'm actually not sure what oral health is?? oral medicine are both qualified in dentistry and medicine and do all the screening tests mentioned above and liaise with most other specialties.

MsUumellmahaye - I PM'ed you, I hope you don't mind

drivenfromdistraction - I have such a restricted diet I'm be concerned about cutting more out under medical supervision I have eliminated: Milk, egg, green veg (except green beans), coconut, almond, onion & garlic & pulses. But I will talk to the GP about false negatives and see what he suggests.

I feel I spend my life whinging about this & my ME & my FM & my IBS - it would be lovely if they were all one dealable with thing
