No, it is not often bad news, but I can fully understand your concern.

How old is she?

Sometimes opticians refer patients because their optic nerves look blurry and this can very occasionally mean that there is pressure or swelling within the nerve. More often than not though, it is a totally harmless phenomenon called 'disc drusen'. The disc drusen move to the surface of the optic nerve around the pre-teen age and they make the nerve look blurry.

Unfortunately, only scans and blood tests can differentiate the two and so opticians have to err on the side of caution, just on case.

I hope everything is ok with your daughter.

I had optic neuritis when I was in my esrly 20's. I can tell you about that if it would help you
