Ice pack or hit water bottle to soothe teeth/ throat /ear?

I have got an infection round my wisdom tooth, started ABs today, but have reached max limits for both paracetamol and ibuprofen - can't take any more till midnight. Am wondering if heat or cold might see me through till then? The infection seems to have given me swollen glands, sore throat and ear ache and even the pain killers are not helping much.

I think I'd go with a hot water bottle as ice could make it more painful.

I've just been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia and a torn muscle in my face which have very similar symptoms to what you describe. You need to alternate heat and cold so ice pack for half an hour then hot water bottle for half an hour and repeat.

You also need codeine.

I only have cocodamol but am at my daily limit for paracetamol. Will try the alternating hot cold.

Do, it does help.

If you've got anything that massages gently too that is good. Even a vibrator wrapped in a towel might help Grin

Try putting warm olive oil in your ear for the pain.
I found warm hot water bottles helped when I had an infected wisdom tooth.

It sounds like pericoronitis.

If so, big no no to heat (although I'm sure it would feel nice initially).

Pericoronitis is an acute bacterial infection, and if you warm the area up, the bacteria will thrive and thrive in there until your gum swells up like a balloon.

Ice would be much better to slow down the growth of the bacteria.

Salt water rinses also good (but minging, I know Smile)

It is pericoronitis, I went to the dentist yesterday, she has referred me to hospital to have it out but the waiting list is v long. Oh dear, I have been using a hot water bottle, probably the reason I now have a golf ball size lump under my chin and can't swallow or talk. I will just use ice, and keep taking the antibiotics. The painkillers don't seem to make much difference, never felt pain like it.

Can you go to your doctor for higher codeine dose OP? You sound like you need 30/500 codeine to paracetamol and to take two, four times a day.

Nefapam would be a good painkiller to take.
Sorry my advice about heat wasn't good! Although when I used heat I had dry socket :(

I did wonder about going to my dr for better pain relief. The cocodamol I have is 8/500. Ibuprofen is usual 400mg but neither doing much. The golf ball size gland is still there and showing no signs of going. Have had to take day off workHmm

Some dizzy and bad co, thanks, I have just phoned my drs and someone is going to give me a call back. I didn't realise there were higher doses; I'd sent Dh's to the pharmacy but they just said it was prescription only anyway.

Watch this space, I am desperate for something to put me out of my misery!

I would ask for hardcore stuff - tramadol, nefapam etc
