Am cooking tea right now. Anyone open to my suggestion? Will keep an eye on things - and peanut/chop, lets not argue, eh? It is a difficult thing to face. Any ex-smokers would be welcome?

lottelou - I smoked for years and kept trying and failing to give up, mostly because I felt like I was denying myself something that I liked. (I stopped when pg then started again when dd was a few months old - how daft was that!) Then I went on the Allen Carr workshop about 3 years ago and stopped there and then. It was like being set free. Go for it - let smoking go and I'll be cheering you on. You can do it if you really want to. Good luck.

Are you trying to stop lottelou? Or do you want to support others that do?
I have been off the fags 1.8 years. Havent looked back....a combination of Allen and whyquit.com finally got into my thick head that i couldnt smoke anymore.
Feel like the dogs bollocks

I know that when i was smoking, i hated it when a friend / family member told me they'd packed up. I just hated it. Smokers love to be in a little club. We all know it's an awful habit, we know it could kill us and makes our clothes & breath smell and we might end up with a mouth like a cats bum (). Problem is, you have to reach a point where you really really want to give up; trying before then is pointless imo and just makes you feel worse because you fail. The question is - what is going to make you really really want to give up? For me, it was thinking i might be pregnant (i was, just) and finding out simultaneously that a close family member had smoking-induced lung cancer.

I still get cravings though.

OK, hello all, I am really happy to tell you that you can stop smoking.... I smoked for nearly 20 years and I really enjoyed it, I LIKED being a smoker, it was cool and gave me something to do & was great in social situations when you're not sure what to do or who to talk to, but hey light up a fag & someones' sure to join you....! etc etc etc

Anyway I stopped 2 years ago (with hypnotherapy) and can honestly say I have not wanted one since. It's as though I have never smoked which is a great position to be in as there are no cravings.

You can do it. You just fill in the gaps where you used to smoke with other things... playing with the children, exercising, cooking, and in my case drinking!

Give it a go if you can - there is so much support out there if you need it.

Charliecat - milkbar! Feeling a bit desperate and wondered if others were in similar boat after today. And would welcome the benefit of experiences!! Have been at it solid since 1990 (16 years) and off and on before then. Have made efforts, to no avail, but getting messages from body, and the news, there is no choice for me. I try not to look at it as a denial of pleasure too, but it is so hard...

Well done all!! Yes, there is a little rebels club at work where we consire to smoke, and gossip, - done patches, hypnotherapy, will power, Know that I DON'T need to go to a desert island, and there is something inbetween for me. Nasty recent separation promoted the drug to smoke feelings away, but that is over now and am highly motivated - news today was the cap on it all.....

edam, loads of well-wishing from me. Don't set yourself up to give up the day after attending the course; just let the messages sink in and keep repeating them to yourself. The first couple of weeks can be hellish for most of us, there's no escaping it, but that's usually when your resolve is at its firmest to drag you through it. Good luck!

Squarer · 02/08/2006 20:42

Good luck Edam! You will do it
Read the Allen Carr book Lottelou. It's all it took for me. It's about changing your perceptions of cigarette smoking and why you do it which is what the book does (previously I tried inhalers, gum, patches, hypnotherapy, accupuncture, zyban not in that order and some more than once.... and finally a book )

Lottelou · 02/08/2006 20:46

Thanks Squarer. I know I am not pathetic, and there is a way for me, and it is really good to hear of all of these success. It really is. If you good people can do it, so can I.

Its getting your mind working with you and not against you, your body is going to want a fag...its addicted to them, its getting your mind to be in prime condition to fight the evil weed that you need.

charliecat's right - your mind can help you do this, rather than conspire against you. Just keep repeating positive messages lottelou.

Yes charliecat, I see. I will be applying affirmations about myself in the coming days. I have beautiful daughter, a good job, nice house, otherwise good health and nice body, a handful of long-standing firm friends, but..this hateful thing curses me..as I keep saying, news today re The Man shocked me....

Thank you all! Don't stop!! But Tesco-time is here! Catch you all after the check out....
