After not having bothered to be at the follow-up appointment on Monday the consultant sent me an e/mail, which said this among other things:

"I was sorry to miss you and ds in clinic yesterday. It sounds as though in general he is doing well. Dr
x felt that he had quite a lot of upper respiratory noise, which could be misinterpreted as lower respiratory, and we are anxious that he is not over treated with antibiotics when he may just have a cold. It can be a difficult distinction."

Now ds has just had a course of antibiotics, prescribed by GP, for chest infection. And now this. I feel that this places a bit of a burden on my shoulders - what do they want me to do? How can I decide whether there's chest noise there or just upper respiratory noise? I just don't know what to do with this e/mail and I feel quite annoyed!

Why did you not go to the appt?

I did go, the consultant didn't!

The named consultant didn't show up, so I saw a different doctor who wasn't familiar with the case.

If you don't have any more appts booked with gp or consultant, I should just reply to the consultant by email and ask what he/she wants you to do. Feels like consultant forgot the concluding paragraph from your email - bit distracted maybe?

Oh sorry!!! I thought this sounded uncharacteristic (said that like I know you). I think you should phone his secretary and ask for a time when you can speak to him - over the phone if necessary - and say that it's urgent.
