Dental abscess and now droopy eyelid, terrified.

I had a swelling one up last week so went to the dentist and have a abscess caused by root canal.
He put me on antibiotics which finished yesterday and although it's gone down it hasn't gone completely - I'm seeing the dentist again Monday.
Yesterday I had an eye test and straight after my left eyelid went droopy as I left the optitions!?!
Turns out I do need glasses but the eyelid is still dropping after a good nights sleep and am now terrified the infection had spread after googling and a droopy eyelid is a sign of Cavernous sinus thrombosis :-(
I can't go to a doctor and say I think I have this with just this symptom...can I?

It seems strange it came just after the optician. Did they do anything to your eye? Like put drops in or something?

Report
Emilycreaven999 · 21/12/2013 22:33

Nope just a standard eye test
I do need glasses but only mild lenses just for reading etc she said
Surely I would know if I had thrombosis?
Just petrified as I have an abscess and now this symptom :(

I think you should ring the out of hours and I think its fine to suggest what you think may be the problem.

Yes ring 111 if you are worried they are a bit slow but helpful x

Scary. Do you have a headache? Or any pain in your eye balls?

Report
Emilycreaven999 · 21/12/2013 22:45

No headache and no pain
It's not majorly droopy just a tiny bit lower than the other one
But still enough to be terrifying me now
My husband thinks I'm over reacting and that as I've been on antibiotics since the abscess came up it can't be this and thinks the eye was just over worked in the exam causing this

No headache and no pain is a good sign.

Has the droopyness become worse or stayed the same?

It sounds like you might have Bell's Palsy if your eyelid is drooping. It is not a waste of time to go to a walk-in centre or see an OOH doctor.
If it is Bell's Palsy sometimes treatment is available depending on the extent and how the eye is affected.

Stayed the same

Sorry for all the q's but was the abscess upper or lower teeth? And just to be clear, you have no other symptoms at all?

Visual disturbance? Weakness of your facial muscles, arms or legs, difficulty speaking or swallowing, or a severe headache?
No symptoms of an eye infection, including pain and redness in the eye, fever, a bulging eye, or difficulty moving the eye?

Abscess is lower left hand side and the ey affected is the right hand side
I've had headaches on and off for months hence deciding to see an optition as I guessed I may have needed glasses but no major headaches since this happened.
Absolutely no other symptoms at all just this slightly droopy eyelid which happened 2 mins after leaving the optition :(

I think it's highly unlikely that you have cavernous sinus thrombosis. You'd almost certainly have pain if nothing else.

Do you get migraines at all? I do and I sometimes get a droopy eye - some types of migraine are painless.

Bell's palsy is another possibility but as it's just your eyelid that's droopy and nothing else on the same side if your face it's unlikely - but I'm happy to be corrected if that's not the case.

If you feel you need more reassurance tonight do call 111. Otherwise see how it is in the morning. If no improvement at all give them a ring and see what they say.

It's horrible when something's wrong and you're unsure of what it is, and I'd be worrying just as much as you - if not more! - if it were me.

Fingers crossed for some improvement in the morning - do let us know Thanks

How are you this morning Emily?

Hi,
Well after a horrible sleepless night it's still exactly the same.
It hasn't got any worse or any better.
Littlenoona, is it more common to occur on the same side of the face going by your questions last night?
I just hope I would know if i did have something serious :(
The abscess is still there although not as large but feels quite hard now although tender if prodded quite hard.
I did actually see the doctor Friday as I was worried that it hadn't gone down enough but she said as there was no facial swelling to just wait until I saw the doctor Monday.

Sorry to hear that Emily. You could try my home remedies of drinking thyme tea(just made using the dried herb or fresh if you have it) that is good for infection I put a little honey in it. I always rub liquid ambesol on a bad tooth it is an aneasthetic and also antiseptic. normally for mouth ulcers but I find it good for toothache too. Another thing is to rinse your mouth with hot salt water regularly throughout the day. This can also help the infection. Put more ambesol on afterwards. If you're worried don't be scared to call 111.

Hi Emily, sorry to hear that there's no improvement. Sinus thrombosis is more common if the abscess is in the upper teeth and it would be more than likely that the same side of the face would be involved.

LittleNoona · 22/12/2013 15:01

Also, if the swelling is hard it's probably still localised, ie; not spreading.

Thankyou for your reply, you seem to know your stuff!
I hope you are right!
I don't feel unwell, just tired from a terrible nights sleep yesterday.
It is just very strange to have happened literally seconds after the eye exam, I've googled it for the last 2 days however am coming up with absolutely zilch

Hope you're feeling better this morning. Even if you're feeling ok get to that dentists appointment today and explain what's happened. Print out what you posted on Saturday and press for a second course if antibiotics- even if the abscess seems almost cleared its going to be a pita to get treatment for the rest of the week now.

Hi,
Just back from the dentist and they think I have a cyst rather than an abscess seeing as its now more " bony " but not painful.
Has anyone had one :(
