Help, I'm in a lot of pain, have taken paracetamol and ibuprofen and still in a lot of pain. I'm meant to be taking dad for a big day out tomorrow ( got tickets booked to see a show ) so can't go to the emergency dentist until Monday. How can I get through tomorrow without being in too much pain?, I have some antibiotics in the house and have taken one ( I know I shouldn't take anything until its been looked at but I need to be ok tomorrow and if it stops me from waking up with a huge puffy face it has tone worth a shot ), is there anything else I can do or take?

could you try nhs direct or ringing 111 ?

they should be able to provide you with some advice or more urgent dentist support

Rinse with tepid salty water (don't swallow)

Do you have anbesol adult strength gel or even teething gel to numb it? Also the dissolving aspirin swished in your mouth then swallowed is very good for relieving pain.

Can you get to an out of hours GP? You'll need antibiotics if it is an abscess.

Seriously I would get to a dentist tonight. They can numb you up at least and give you antibiotics. If its an abcess then it needs to be drained. I know from bitter experience of being fobbed off with antibiotics and spending the weekend in sheer agony.
Clove oil, maximum paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine took the edge off for me. I ended up having the tooth pulled out after a failed root canal. I never want to feel that pain again!
Learn from my suffering and see a dentist tonight!

Thank you, will rinse with warm salty water, paracetamol has taken the edge of the pain but still bloody hurts. I just need to get through tomorrow then I can go to the dentist ( don't want to let dsd down ), I don't really want to have to drive around tonight waiting to be seen by gp or a dentist as I have to drive quite far tomorrow ( so could do with being in bed early ), will take more pain killers before bed in hope I can sleep.

It is a tooth I had filled a few years ago, was told that I might need a root kennel eventually but has been fine up until now, the tooth has always been a bit loose, I would rather have it taken out then have a root kennel, I have a dentist phobia so if I do have to go I would rather it was quick ( extraction rather than being sat in the chair for ages getting a root kennel ).

I have teething gel so will try and put some around the tooth and roof of my mouth ( which seems to be hurting as much as the tooth itself ).

Been up most of the night, pain killers only working for 2 hours then have to wait 2 hours in pain before I can take more, have been taking the antibiotics I found in my cupboard since last night ( have taken 3 ) hoping they would start working but no, deffintly a abscess, have woken with a lump near the roof of my mouth, salt water seems to help a little, need to get through today ( got to set off soon ) and then will go to emergency dentist tomorrow ,hopefully antibiotics will kick in ( they have kicked in by upsetting my stomach so are in my system ), is there anything stronger I can take other than codeine ? ( can't take it as it makes me sick and dizzy ), I need something that will not effect my driving, going to pop into boots on the way anyway as I have run out of nufofen.

Try taking solpadeine max and nurofen plus together but do not buy from the same chemist as they are very strong. Downside they may well make you sleepy fienif you home not so good if you are out and about.

Speak to the pharmacist if you are going into Boots but really you need some antibiotics to help with what sounds like an abcess.

The only thing that will help an abcess is drilling the tooth. Get to a dentist!
Hope you feel better soon, I would never wish the hell that is a tooth abcess on anyone.

Spent most of the night at A&e, pain was unbearable, dialled 111 and after 2 hours was told to go to a hospital 35 miles away, no way I could go that far so went to another A&E . Was given morphine and then codeine a long with antibiotics, was then sick when I got home ( told them codeine makes me sick ), now the abcess is huge, wide awake in pain and not sue if I should take more anti biopics as I was sick?

If you actually have a lump on the roof of your mouth, then HOT salty mouthwashes (as hot & salty as you can stand). You want to encourage that bump to burst because it's instant relief if it does.

Thank you ,have been doing hot salty mouth washes but still want burst, if anything it has grown ( now covering half the roof of my mouth ), have just taken another dose of antibiotics, was told to take 2 last night and then one a day for 6 days but I'm worried that the 2 I took yesterday might not ave worked as I was sick 20 minutes after having them, should I take 2 today instead of the one?

Just tried to eat a bit of toast so I could take my tablet but can hardly eat, didn't eat yesterday and hardly drank ( now drinking through a straw ), feeling very sorry for myself.

You could call a pharmacist once they open to ask about the antibiotics. If you're only taking one a day, then it must be quite a high dose, so be careful.

Keep on with the hot mouthwashes. It'll encourage the pus to come to the surface and hopefully go pop. That will immediately take the pressure off the nerve in the tooth, and you will feel better.

In the meantime, please keep an eye on your swelling. If it starts to look like it might affect your breathing, then get straight to A&E.

(Not a dentist, but been there).

HettiePetal · 27/10/2013 06:57

Oh - and with the mouthwashes.....don't just swish. Get a load into your mouth and hold it there so that it's over the lump. Once it feels like it's cooling, spit and do it again. Keep going till the cup is empty.

Did you see a dentist/ max fax in A and E?
You really need to be seeing one today. A and E will just give you 'holding treatment' until you see a dentist.

I have antibiotics but was sick after the first dose so probably didn't work, I now have swelling both sides if my tooth ( including the roof of my mouth ), I am in agony and maxed out on pain killers. Have taken a extra dose of antibiotics but not sure weather to phone out of hour dentist, trouble is I have no one to take me and if they drill it I won't be able to drive back but if I don't go I might not be able to get there tomorrow if this storm hits.

This might be too little in your case, but try chewing on cloves, it works as a a local anasthetic. Hope you get sorted soon!

Update, woke up at 4 am and the abscess had burst but is just weeping out puss slowly, the pain isn't half as bad, hopefully it will continue. To drain and antibiotics will stop the infection.

Great news. I wonder why these things always happen on a weekend?

Report

Still swollen even though it burst, seems to be refilling (just burst again) and it seems to be 2 abcesses, the one on the other side of the tooth seems to be growing but not hurting as much, I think I will be going to the dentist tomorrow to get it drained if it doesn't go down tonight, antibiotics making me feel sick and upsetting my stomach.
