Help! Bowel and poo (sorry TMI)

ok it's not me it's DH.

It's been a week now.

We thought he was constipated, although he now tells me he hasn't felt he's needed to go but can't, just has awful pain.

So had some laxatives, then he ends up all night with squitty poo. Also tried enemas.

Been off work all week (he's never off) saw doc who was all dismissive said yeah jjust constipated take 2 laxatives and you need to eat. So he etas takes 2 - up ALL NIGHT uncomfortable.

NOw obv he's feeling rotten from lack of sleep anyway.

So yesterday I say you know you haven't really eaten much all week then had laxatives. Why don;t we try eating and no laxatives and stop forcing yuoursefl onto the loo - as he isn't getting the urge to go just thinks he should.

So yesterday, eats well and feels marginally better.

Go to bed and although not up all night he is in a lot of discomfort and about 3/4 trips to loo where he doesn't do something each time he goes. He described one like ribbons.

Now we don;t know what to do, I feel really sorry for him as he is very rarely ill. He's behind with his work and he's knackered.

Have managed to book docs appt again for mon morning with a different doctor.

Didn't want him piling himself with laxatives if not doing anything!

Any advice please?

He says pain is all around his abdomen then under his tummy button

He may have an obstruction. Best to get checked again.

Hopefully the gp can offer some answers, or if not refer him further up. For the pain he could try hot water bottles and tummy massage? Both of these were recommended to me when my IBS pain got incredibly severe- obviously they didn't cure it by any means but did take the edge off of it.

I presume ribbon poo means thin stools? I would get your DH push for further testing. Hope he feels better soon

yes do see GP again

in the meantime get glycerine suppositories from the pharmacist, about £1 for a pack, they go erm ahem 'up' to soften any poo that's got itself onto a big, unpassable lump. Insert one, hang about near the loo for a bit then should result in an easy poo and empty-out. But the source of the problem does need exploring.

Is he still in pain right now?

Did the GP do a rectal examination?

I am wondering about a bowel blockage/obstruction maybe by impacted stools.

I am on movicol permanently for bowel issues and the packet says to take 8 sachets for an impaction.
Obviously dont go doing this without a proper diagnosis but it maybe quite simple(ish) to solve once you know whats going on. Perhaps ask about movicol - its a gentle laxative but works for me when rocket fuel stuff does not. It draws fluid into the bowel softening any stools there making them easier to pass.

I would get back to a different Dr asap and see what else can work. Perhaps it may be wise to avoid foods that may constipate like eggs etc.

Definitely needs to be seen again. This does not sound normal. He needs a rectal examination. If his pain gets any worse or he starts vomiting take him to A&E.

Kids w encopresis get bowel impaction and liquid stool can seep around. I think your big kid has that.

maxybrown · 20/10/2013 13:41

I think so too Hansie!

He has some movicol now anyway and seems to have some movement this morning.

His rectum feels empty as it were.

He slept better last night anyway and will still see GP in morning

Is he on any medications that can cause constipation, even things like co-codamol can do it.

Doctor should suggest an ultrasound to have a look at his bowel

nope nothing.

He's been admitted to hospital this morning with suspected strangulated hernia Hmm

Just waiting to hear back from him not comfirmed it is that yet!

Oh God! How is your DH now?

Report
maxybrown · 24/10/2013 17:38

Well, he came home!

They said the hernia, for now, seems to have righted itself. But they seem pretty certain that is what's caused it and so is a concern. So he was given 20 billion diff laxatives and should here in 2/4 weeks for appointemnt to discuss the hernia and operation.

so day 3 on high dose lactulose and laxative tablets after an enema at the hospital and things still aren't right Hmm he doesn't feel brilliant that's for sure so i can see him going back but he feels stupid he says - men!

I hope things get sorted out for him, maxy

Report
maxybrown · 25/10/2013 18:23

Thank you :(

He isn't brilliant today and now I'm not sure if it's the actual laxatives causing him a problem.

Without TMI he has been quite a bit since on the lactulose - just not the solid explosion I think he was waiting for Grin

And now although eating reguarly he is losing weight which suggests the laxatives are just making what he eats completely pass away as it were? I don;t know - I have Ulcerative colitis so constipation is not a feature, ever, for me Grin

can you take him straight back to the hospital? I don't like the sound of him losing weight even with ahem er um laxatives taken into account x x x

(feel free to ignore, I have no idea what I do would do in this situation)
