It's a panic isn't it? Dd has done a similar thing and it was very worrying, you've seen the doctor and if he is still bad tonight then I'd see if you can get a doctors appoiuntment for Monday - emergency one if you need to. My line of thought is always 'better to be safe' and if it does nothing else and you get sent away with the same advice then at least you've put your mind to rest.

Does he still have a temperature? It is good that he is drinking and sleep is good for babies when they have been unwell. Try him with something to eat today - avoid milky foods because they are more likely to cause diarrheoa when babies are on antibiotics. It is because the bowel gets a bit upset. If he is drowsy though and stops drinking you must get him seen again by a doctor. If he is on the right antibiotic you should see an improvement today as he should have had about 48 hours worth of antibiotics. Are you giving him calpol or nurofen? He won't want to eat if his throat is sore.

Sorry, also meant to say that when Dd was ill she too just slept and slept, I was told it is just the way their body fights the infections, as if they put everything else on hold and just concentrate on getting better!
Also, if you really panic before then then good old NHS direct is always there. Hope he's better soon.

He needs to have regular paracetamol and infant ibuprofen (nurofen) to keep his temperature down. When the temperature is up babies get drowsy. Paracetamol is every 4 hours and ibuprofen is every 6 hours. You can give the first dose together to make sure the temp comes down. If he is drowsy despite having medicine, I would phone the doctor again.

Also, you can give the medicine when he is sleeping. Just put it in the side of his cheek with the syringe. He will swallow.

The sleeping is OK. Just make sure he drinks when he is awake and keep his temperature down. If he is no better by Monday, take him back to docs. If he gets more drowsy, had a high pitched cry, or very cold hands and feet with hot body and possibly a rash, call a doctor as those are signs of meningitis.

Also give him Ibuprofen last thing at night to keep his temperature stable.

tjgx - if he is only moaning when he is awake then I would get him seen again by the doctor. My DS2 had pneumococcal meningitis when he was 6 months old which was triggered by an ear infection. He should be bright enough when he wakes. Did you say he has been taking paracetamol regularly? Is it bringing his temperature down? If he seems to be having difficulty staying awake and is moaning, get him seen again as soon as possible. Better to be safe.

Better for him to be seen directly by a professional to know if he is OK. Let us know how he is.
