Hot flushes at 29?

Greensleeves · 13/06/2006 16:18

I have had three MAJOR hot flushes today, as in serious "I'm on fire" unmistakeable hot flushes. I am 29 (on Thursday :)) and NOT pregnant, so what the hell is it? Anyone else have inexplicable hot flushes? It's horrible!!

An over-active thyroid can cause hot flushes. Otherwise some medication can cause them - are you taking anything at the moment?

Maybe you are just hot

Perhaps you are being overcome with some overwhelming feelings of shame and embarrassment...is that a possibility at all?

No, definitely not just hot, these are very distinctive waves of intense heat, not like being generally too hot at all.

I am on amytriptyline for anxiety, I went to the doctor last week to say that I thought the drug was causing me to gain weight for no reason (haven't changed my diet, and am doing more exercise, so shouldn't be putting weight on) but he said they weren't linked. Now I have hot flushes Sad

Amitriptyline can cause sweating, sensitivity to heat and hot flushes - it's probably that.

OK thanks WWB, I'll go back to the doc.

It's quite a common side effect of most anti-depressants/anti-anxiety tablets - you may find you continue to get them even if the GP changes your tablets.

These are ladylike hot flushes. I do not sweat. I glow.

The pills sound bloody awful. Keep hassling him until he sorts you out something else, won't you?

Hmm, I've had hot flushes from fever, or oncoming illness. I've had them somewhat randomly (although, on reflection, it might have been shame and embarassment, thinking about it. But it was pretty random.). But I'm generally a warm sort of person.

They sound unpleasant, Greeny.

I've just found on a US website that amytriptyline commonly causes weight gain Shock

I am going to ambush that lousy quack and make him admit it's NOT my fault for being a greedy salad-dodger.... or I might just rip his head off and sh*t down his neck Angry

I have several incidents from my life that cause a huge hot flush of shame and embarrassment if I call them to mind. I would cheerfully pay good money to have them surgically removed from my memory.
