hehe how old is he?

a lot of babies will wee in a potty if you take their nappy off and sit them up on it

try when he's woken up from a nap

worth a shot

The only way I could ever get a sample from dd was to leave her without a nappy and follow her around with a bowl to catch the wee.

There are some ideas \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=138&threadid=69542#1536604\here} which might help.

Use a cloth nappy and then wring it out? Nothing too absorbent though. How about a muslin or a tea towel?

It was the old following him around with a bowl for us too.

Top tip though, place a few around the house.

It wasnt as difficult as I thought it woudl be.

If it's a paedatric u bag then you have to take the two bits of sticky off, stick it round his willy and then he will be able to wee into the bag, put the nappy on as usual and check the bag every 15mins once he has done a wee you cen take it off and put it in a clean container, did the GP give you a sample bottle as well? Make sure you stick it down quite well otherwise the bag can fall off.

DS (10 days) had a little plastic bag stuck in his nappy area to catch his wee when he was in the neonatal unit. they had to try to get it twice as the first was contaminated with poo.

There should be a cardboard surround at the top of the bag, you need to take that off and it will leave two sticky bits.

when mine were tiny and needed wee samples I used to stand thme or dip their feet in water. For some reason, when they were tiny especially, they always did a wee in the bath.

my DD3 had wee infections when she was a baby and then had to go thro loads of tests. The nurses after one had to make her wee, after filling her bladder (was an xray/scan type test to test for kidney reflux),and she didn't...until i siggested putting her feet in a bowl of water.......and it workedGrin

if you do try this tho you have to be fairly good at holding them and holding a pot under them to catch the wee.....turns you into an excellent mummy jugglerGrinWink

If he's only 5 weeks he'll still be weeing every 20 minutes or so ... can you try lying him on a mat without a nappy, and catching the wee in a bowl? If you have a plastic changing mat you could even let him wee on the (clean!) mat, then pour the wee into a bottle. It only needs to be a small amount.

the bits stick around his penis so that his penis sticks into the bag (iyswim)

with ds, we had to do loads of these samples (grrr) at that age because he had extended jaundice. I found best way was to do what wwb suggested and take his nappy off and wait for the wee to come and catch it in a sterile sample pot (hopefully doc has given you one!). I found best time was after a feed.
