Anyone on copper coil, could you possibly answer some questions for me? Just had one fitted..

I had a copper coil fitted about 48 hours ago. My stomach has bloated horribly and I'm still cramping. Any rule of thumb for how long this will last?

Also I feel like I can feel it - like I have a tampon in - maybe the strings are too long? Did you feel/were you aware of yours at first? And how long does it take to just forget about it?

At the moment, with the cramps, major bloating and sensation that something is up there already - I can't think of anything worse than using it for its contraceptive purpose!

And (apologies if TMI) I feel a little nervous about going for a poo. Almost like when I had my C-section and I felt very aware of my whole uterus area and very fragile around there - like the pressure would push the device out. Clearly it would be a fairly rubbish form of contraception if everytime someone went to the loo the coil got pushed out but I wondered if anyone else was as pathetic as me about this!

The insertion wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be, so at least that's a relief!

Any reassurance/experiences gratefully received. I've just come off depo last month after a hideous reaction to it - so I'm really wanting this to settle down and work..

Both times I had mine fitted the cramping and bloating lasted a few days, maybe not quite a week.
I was aware of it too, but that also passed.
For quite a while it felt like my body was trying to push it out, so I know what you mean about going to the loo, but it hasn't budged and it's been in 18 months now.
I'd just go to bed with a hot water bottle if I were you, it was miserable for the first couple of days!

Hi, everyone's experience is different but I know I certainly still felt like you do after 48 hours and was very 'aware' that I has been fiddled with! You need a bit of time to settle in, but bear with with it as it will be so worth it. My first period after insertion lasted for about 3 weeks and was pretty painful to begin with, but over six months everything period wise gradually calmed down and I can honestly say my periods aren't painful at all now, although they last a bit longer.

I found my period carried on a bit longer than it normally does.(I'm sure.I had it fitted while bleeding). I also had the worry about the pooing thing, which is totally illogical, as pushing with those muscles will not make the cervix open, that is done through contractions!
I would give it three months before deciding it isn't suitable.
Your strings do sound like they could be a bit long but they do soften up and at least you will be able to find them in order to reasure yourself that your coil is still there.

Thanks so much all, this is great, so reassuring! I made the mistake of googling and just got lots of horror stories about people still having cramps and bloating after 6 months and was feeling a bit concerned! Must remember not to obsessively google everything! Thank you :)
