Sore legs - growing pains??

DS1 (nearly 4 yrs) has been complaining of sore legs for a week now. He says they hurt inside and in no particular part. There are no obvious signs of injury. They seem to hurt more first thing in the morning and after nursery and last thing at night. So I had been thinking it was just tiredness. But last night he woke at 2am crying in pain. Has anyone any ideas? Is this plain old 'growing pains?' and if so, what on earth can I do to help him? Or could it be something else?

TIA

My dd (5) has complained on and off in the same way for over a year.
Used to think it was a n old wives tale, now not so sure.
A kiss and a rub keeps her happy.
