Infected Scalp Cyst

Ok, have had a small grape-sized cyst on my scalp for the past 15 odd years. Not painful, sometimes uncomfortable and remained roughly same size. It is at the top back of my head on the left hand side.

Last week, however, following conjunctivitis/ eye infection in my left eye I noticed that the cyst was painful. It also felt as if there was fluid around the lump and it is marginally bigger.

A week on and it is a consistent throbbing pain that feels as if someone has tried to push something into my head. If I turn over to my left side in my sleep I wake up because of the pain. It also feels hot, and as if there is a lot of pressure in it and it is incredibly painful to touch. It sounds like it's infected doesn't it sad?

I have a doctor's appointment for next Wednesday as that was the earliest i could get but I'm wondering whether I should go to the walk in clinic today and ask for anti-biotics?

If I could easily see it I would be tempted to attempt some self-surgery (have read too many sporners threads on here for my own good grin but decided not to sound the klaxon here) but I daren't (and am too much of a coward really) and probably would make it worse wouldn't I? I have had a bit of a poke and gentle squeeze but that made me cry with the pain.

Am I going to be wasting the walk-ins valuable time if I go today and will they tell me off for wasting their time and should I just wait it out until next Wednesday?

You won't be wasting their time at all. You're in pain, go.

Thank you - I went and they were lovely. I got prescribed antibiotics but having a problem finding somewhere that has them in stock because of Easter hmm. Hopefully will be in luck tomorrow.

Klaxon! Just an update for any curious sporners folks. Finally got the antibiotics yesterday so have started those. Today however, I was feeling the cyst and thinking that it felt very soft and as if it had a lot of fluid in it. I wanted to look so managed to get hand mirror and look in the mirror in a convoluted arm manoeuvre. I gave it a bit of not too gentle poke and, wow, it pretty much exploded!

I was there a good fifteen minutes and my goodness the gunk was unbelievable. It did literally hit the mirror on several occasions grin and was what seemed to be a mixture of solid gunk and pus. Once I started I couldn't stop as it seemed that there was way more than the size of the cyst indicated and I was morbidly fascinated at what was coming out.

I have cleaned it and put antiseptic lotion on it - it has diminished in size but it is hard to tell whether there's any more gunk lurking or if it is just swelling because of the infection. The skin is quite tender now due to my earlier efforts so I am going to leave it be overnight and revisit in the morning. grin

Before anyone asks, I've not taken photos - my hair pretty much covers it and the angle is pretty impossible to photo but given that I have had the blighter for over 15 years it's about time it paid its dues grin
