How many sachets of movicol can I take in one day?

I have had a problem with constipation for a few weeks. Didn't take anything for it, was going every 4-5 days or so (and the other complications that come with as a conseqence of that).

At the weekend, I took ducolax after not going for 9 days, it took two days and 3 tablets to get things moving and it was quite a horrendous experience. I had spoke to GP to get advice on it over that weekend and then saw the GP on monday to discuss the long term problem. She has given me 10 sachets of movicol (generic version) to take one a day. I have taken then from tues through to today (and two yesterday) but it is not working.

Can I take more than two? will it make me ill like the ducolax did or will it just make it easier to go to the toilet? I don't even feel like I need to go, so not straining, just don't need to go. I am eating plenty of fruit and vegetables at the moment and lots of water/herbal tea to help.

It's really safe. I have taken 8 in one day recently while pregnant. It can cause a little cramping but nothing like senna does. Drink loads of water too.

I had terrible constipation issues after gallbladder op - I don't wish to alarm you but I took 7 Movicol a day for 3 days before there was any hint of action! In the end I could stand it no longer and ate an industrial shitload of dried apricots. Problem solved within two hours!

badger Shock that is a LOT! I cannot bear this whole bloody mess. I have never ever had constipation like this and it is quite shocking how ill it can make people.

oh do apricots work?! might get DH to get some, and some prunes. And I really really fancy a curry. that could help couldn't it?!

so, can I take more than one in one go? or does it have to be spread over time?

bonzo I am worried about the cramping. the ducolax gave me severe cramping, sweats, white as a ghost, thought I was going to through up. felt like i had been poisoned. I don't want that again!

I will never take ducolax again. Totally the same with severe cramping, sweats, etc. Awful stuff.

I'd been constipated for 2 weeks. No idea why. I drank more water, had OJ, fruit, etc. The only thing that got me moving was Fybogel.

I hope you get relief soon.

MsNobody oh I am glad it wasn't just me it affects like that! I will take a look at the fybogel.

I suspect it is related to meds I am taking. Possibly something else but I am not thinking about that yet trying not to

Honestly, I thought I was dying the other week because I took two Ducolax. I was cramping, didn't shit and nearly passed out. I looked like a ghost. I'm not even a drama queen but I thought I was on my way out!

Fybogel for 2 days did it for me. I never thought I'd cheer about having a crap. Grin

My sister swears by Aloe Vera juice in her daily diet but I've not tried that yet.

I felt that too, I recall lying in a ball on the bathroom floor, thinking that I might need to call an ambulance if this did not work and how embarrassing it would be to die in such a way. And like you, not a huge drama queen normally Grin horrendous.

Shame about knowing that aloe vera can work, I have just taken 3 large prongs off my aloe vera and felt it was such a waste! (it is quite a new plant, got knocked over, not yet learnt too much about it). Damn.

What you can do is follow the instructions on the movicol packet for impaction.
I was desperate to get things moving after surgery once so made up a jug of water with eight sachets dissolved in it I believe. It did the job! :)

I have taken three today. One earlier today, and two this afternoon. Lets see how that works!

there are no instructions with it, as it is a generic brand, the pharmacist just put the sachets into a box container, stuck a label on the front. No instructions with it. Typical I dont always read them but could have done with them this time! I did google though...
