Mouth ulcers. Whole family afflicted. Why???

I've had intermittent bouts of mouth ulcers for a few weeks, and this week DH has become totally infested with them all over his tongue. He can hardly eat/talk and is almost in tears with them.
I'm wondering if our DS (18mo) has had them too, as he's recently been particularly off his food (even more-so than usual) and even trusty bananas have been being rejected with a howl.

Now - I know that normal mouth ulcers aren't contagious, so I'm wondering if we could have all got a touch of hand, foot and mouth disease that I've been hearing about as doing the rounds? What do people think? We've not had any other symptoms (other than touches of colds etc and my son who had a day of fever about 3 weeks ago, which I now wonder if that was linked). Don't you get sores all over your hands and feet as well with H,F&M? Or is it possible to just get the mouth bit?
Advice or experiences from anyone who's had it or similar would be greatly appreciated.

I was thinking hf&m just from your thread title. Ds had it last year and had hardly any spots in his mouth, so I guess it could work the other way. And the spots on you hands and feet are like little blisters, not great big weeping sores.

Also mouth ulcers are common when you are run down so it could just be linked to the colds you've had.

Herpes virus (similar to cold sores) can also cause mouth ulcers and blooming nasty ones at that - that might also explain why it's going round the family. Gp can prescribe aciclovir which will hopefully help

My dd had herpetic stomatitis which causes mouth ulcers and blisters. It's very painful. Could it be that? Ulcers are v v painful anyway so I sympathise. They run in my family. I once had to go home from work because I was in too much pain to talk. Everyone was Hmm but it really is painful. Salt water gargling might help?

Thanks for all the tips and ideas. I think it probably isn't herpes virus, because DH seems immune to it (i frequently have cold sores my lips when run down and in 8 years he's yet to become infected. If it was herpes then immune certain I'd have got them all over my lips unknowing my usual pattern.
I think it's likely to be hf&m really, particularly as you say glaikit that you don't need all the areas to be covered for it to be that.
Thankfully we're all on the mend now.
DrJohnson you have my full sympathy for your pain - they're bloody hellish!
