Sick mum just called - I'm worried

Saw my earlier this evening, she was feeling absoloutely fine.

Then she went to my aunts, had a chill con carne and was then violently sick about 45 mins after. She started driving home but then called me as she had to stop the car several times because she kept vomiting.

She's neraly home now but obviously feeling very poorly. She said it came out of absoloutley no-where, literally a sudden feeling of nausea followed by violent vomiting.

NHS website say food poisoning normally occurs 1-3 days after eating the contaminated food. So it could be bug? Anyone had similiar symptoms recently?

She could have reacted to something in the chilli - peppers make me ill! Time will tell. Hope she's ok tomorrow.

It's the season when noroviruses and the like start doing the rounds - virally transmitted stomach bugs. Can come on very suddenly, usually only last 24-48 hours, though some people are more badly affected. Probably more likely than food poisoning - it certainly sounds way too soon for it to have been what she ate for supper.

Gosh - poor mum.

I don't think it would be the chilli- as you say it generally takes a few hours to a day or so to develop.

I hope she feels betterafter a good night's sleep.

There are always vomiting bugs going around though, could be that.

Any chance the kidney beans were undercooked? They can bring on vomiting within 2 - 3 hours I think - although your Aunt would have it too then. Is your Aunt OK?

I had food poisoning from a pub prawn cocktail once. Had meal in the evening and woke up in the night vomiting. Opefully she'll feel better tomorrow.

No-one else ate the chilli, only my mum! (my aunt is on a diet). My mum wasn't sure if it was home cooked or ready meal but will ask about the kidney beans being undercooked.

My mum is 59.

Will look at the links now, thanks.

If they were tinned beans they won't have been undercooked - that only happens if you use dried beans, then you need to soak them and boil for a certain length of time. I think most people would just used tinned for a chilli.

I had food poisoning from a pie once, it was only about an hour before I started vomiting. Lots of boaking bugs going around atm.

Hope she feels better soon.

Thanks everyone, I just felt so helpless as I can't leave the house to look after her as only myself at home with ds. Tried to call my aunt and cousin who were nearby but no answer.

However, after reading the links, it does sound like it's a norovirus/winter vomiting disease, especially as it can start very suddenly. Also read it's highly contagious Sad and ds has been with her all afternoon....

I can have a reaction to food fairly fast. Within an hour.

However it is bug season again so could just be a sickness bug

I thought there were 2 types of food poisoning in general, ones that hit really quickly and ones that take 24hrs+ to hit. I would be blaming it on the chilli myself.

Try not to worry too much. She's not really elderly or anything and if her health is usually ok, then she must have a bug. Try to make sure she drinks plenty.

My nephew was suddenly sick today while at my house. Think a lot of nasty bugs are going round ATM.
Hope she recovers soon.

Just been on the phone to her, she had to hang up again to be sick....she'll have nothing left to throw up soon! She said she really feels like she needs pass stool but nothing is coming out (sorry tmi!)

Viperidae, I always thought food poisoning could take effect much quicker too, but no according to NHS.

Oh and get well soon Iceaddict and anyone else who has the bug....I know it's not serious but it's really really horrible.

This says food poisoning can strike anywhere from 30 minutes to 40 hours afterwards.

Did she have rice? That can have a rapid onset with regards to poisoning too I think.

Some more info about food poisoning caused by toxins here

Hmm weird, wonder why NHS don't acknowledge that food poisoning can happen so quickly.

She keeps calling me in between vomits - I know it's because she needs re-assuring. She went to see a pyschic earlier with my aunty and cousin, and both my mum and my cousin came out feeling sick (although my cousin hasn't vomited) and I've had to reassure her that it's nothing to do with bad spirits...Hmm

The once I've had full blown food poisoning it took 5-6 hrs.

Dodgy spanish prawn soup for lunch, threw up all over the shower getting cleaned up for dinner. Not nice.
