Pain in breast. Not cancer hopefully. What is it? Should I be worried? Are ultrasounds effective?

I've had it for about five months now. It's tender in a specific spot on my breast. Feels a bit gristly. I've seen two GPs - one who saw me after a month to check if there had been any changes. He was happy there hadn't been but could tell I was anxious and said that if I wanted referring to the breast clinic to see a consultant he would.

So...saw consultant. She could feel the gristle and ordered an ultrasound. I had one and was given the all clear saying they found only healthy breast tissue.

But the pain is still there. Do I ignore it now? I'm pregnant now too.

I have had bad mastitis in the past but I was poorly with it. So if that's what this is why isn't it going away?

Not sure what to do now. Is a mammogram more conclusive or should I trust the consultant and the ultrasound?

My mum had a similar thing and part of the muscle had got trapped in part of the sternum. It sorted itself out.

I have had breast lumps investigated on a few occasions now. I have a particular lump on my left breast that is glandular tissue and becomes bigger and painful the week of my period. It is uncomfortable but like the other lumps I have had, nothing to worry about.

When I was referred for the first time I had an ultrasound as they are more reliable when you are under 40. On the other two occasions I had mammograms and ultrasound (I was over 40 by then)

One of the consultants told me that painful lumps are usually nothing to worry about. Perhaps you could go back to your GP and explain that you need to know exactly what the lump is so that you can stop worrying about it.

Thanks ladies. Ethel I don't think it's muscular but I did think it might have been my toddler kicking me in the boob initially!

Julia - thanks for the info. I think I must have something similar. I'm 30 so hoping ultrasound was ok. Yes the pain does seem worse some points but now I'm preggers it's confused things slightly! The consultant said 'it's not cancer so just forget it' but I'm not sure I can!

Ultrasounds are what they use for younger women and I'm sure it's nothing. If there's any doubt at all they do a biopsy. The Breast Clinic will have written to your GP explaining the outcome of the ultrasound, so go back and ask for a copy/ explanation. Last thing you want is it niggling away at you.
