Memory affecting my life

My memory has got really bad over the past few months. I've always been a bit forgetful but now it's starting to get ridiculous - its upsetting me and affecting my life.

For example, I ask someone something, we talk for another twenty seconds, and I ask them again as I can't remember if I've already done it. It's hard to hold conversations as I can't remember what I've just said. I break off halfway through sentences as I can't remember what I was saying or what I wanted to say. I go into a room to do something - I have no idea why I went in there. I've often no memory of the previous day, or weekend, unless I think about it for a good few minutes.

Names, phone numbers etc are fine. Everything else is shocking. I don't know what to do and it's affecting my job and the rest of my life. Help!!

I think you need to go to your GP. Have a look at this page from NHS Choices. Rest assured it is at pains to point out that dementia is very unlikely to be the cause of memory loss in the under 65s! But it includes some things I would never have thought of causing memory loss, such as thyroid problem.

It sounds very upsetting. I hope you can find some help soon.

Have you seen your GP about it? sounds like that might be a good idea. Sorry this is happening to you, it must make life very difficult. Hope someone who can offer more advice comes along soon

Ditto, I am off to the GP about it.

I can remember music not lyrics, find it hard to recall the word I need.

I have medical issues that are probably the cause.

I bore my kids repeating myself.

I use laughter to live with it.

It does worry me.

I am in my thirties.

So are you going to the GP?

Do you have other symptoms?

OP I was like this (with other symptoms) before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I would be half way through a sentence and have no recollection of what I was saying.

I am a lot better now that I am on thyroxine, however my memory is still poor and one of the first signs I get of needing my dose raised is forgetting words / events.

Definitely see your GP. They will be able to help you whatever the cause.
