Hip pain during period. What could this be?

Queenofcake · 22/06/2012 07:50

The past few months I had have pain in one hip thats there for the 1st 3/4 days of my period.

At first I thought I had pulled a muscle or twisted funny as its not like the period pains I used to get when I was young across the tops of my thighs etc. It is like a muscle injury.

However, it has just occurred to me that this is the 4th month on the trot I have had this when I have my period and I get it at no other time. I dont have "normal" period pains and my periods are pretty much OK if a little heavy at times. Its actually really painful effects my sleep as I cannot get comfy in bed and at its worse makes walking uncomfortable.

I am 39 and had my DC 11 and 13 years ago.

Anyone had similar? Any ideas what it can be? Advice??

I get this but I had SPD with my pregnancy five years ago and have had it ever since so have always related it to that.

It might be an ovarian cyst. I have one at the moment and am always aware of pain in my hip. It get much more painful during my period and I find it particularly uncomfortable at night. I've found only strong painkillers help and a hot water bottle.

You may want to have a chat your doctor if the pain is really bad.

Thanks for the suggestions. Its been quite bad actually - even making me limp.

I had a scan a few months back and it showed a bulky womb which consultant said was down to my age, my body changing etc and maybe a few tiny fibroids.

Will see how I go for one more month and if no better - take myself back off the to Dr.

It is possible you have endometriosis which would explain why it only hurts at period time.

An external scan won't really show enough in this case, you might need a laparoscopy to properly diagnose it, or another option is the if you aren't trying to get pregnant you could go on the pill without any breaks in between which solved the problem for me ( after two sets of surgery)

Can you just develop endometriosis at the age of 39???

It will be something I will ask about.

Thank you for your response rookiemater

I have it too, and had SPD in two pregancies ( last one 6 years ago ). The pregnancy hormones caused the SPD, so I guess it's related.

I'm not sure Queenofcake, but its worth asking and if its period related, taking the pill straight through could get rid of the problem

I have arthritis, I'm your age and the only time it troubles me is if I do lots of walking and during my period. I take ibuprofen at night time and paracetamol in the day.

I wanted to add to this old thread so anyone doing an internet search for hip pain during period, hip pain with period, hip pain with menstruation, pain in hip during period, hip pains......I have suffered for the past 2 years and FINALLY today I found a Dr. in Columbus, OH ( I relocated here a short time ago) who had an answer. I have pains in my hips that feel like someone is crushing them for two days before my period and then during my period. I had a uterine ablation in 2009 and tubal in 2008. Here is what Wikipedia has to say: Post-ablation tubal sterilization syndrome (PATSS) is a rare complication that could occur in patients with prior tubal sterilization following an endometrial ablation procedure. Occult bleeding into the obstructed tubes causes tubal distention and cyclic pelvic pain. This is also called Cause of my issue is post endometrial ablation syndrome, when only one of the procedures has been done. See your doctors. It gets to the point where the pain is so bad from the swelling and pressing on nerves that I can not walk. There is no amount of hot showers, Tylenol, tramadol or any other non narcotic pain killer that will end the pain.

I am also 27. I have experienced the same pains. I had an MRI for a mass and it turned out to be a cyst but what they also found was that I have Pelvic Congestion Syndrone. It's basically varicose veins on your euterous leading down your groin. You may have the same condition. I'm also in the process of finding out whether or not I have endometriosis as well. But I have the same exact pain you described. Just thought I'd mention PCS. Good luck!

At the age of 36 I went to the GP with this exact same problem, although I got pain when I ovulate as well as during my period. The GP said that a) I was fat and getting arthritis and b) she would give an internal examination (wish I had challenged her on that as I'm not sure what she was feeling for, not sure arthritis can be diagnosed vaginally and she poo poo'd my other concerns).

Six months later I suffered an ectopic pregnancy. Turns out I have endometreosis causing the EP and the pain. Once the endo was treated laproscopically the pain improved.

I'm 31 and have been keeping track of my menstrual cycles via an app. I looked back over the past few months and noticed I've been having left hip/groin pain (and travels down the same left leg) just before my period begins.
I'm glad i was able to find this forum.

I've been getting constant left hip pain for the last month. I've also been having what feels like urine infection but isn't so I've got to have a scan. I read somewhere that this these two symptoms could be related to ovarian cyst. Does anyone know about this. I have health anxiety so am dreading the scan and getting myself into a state about it. The pain isn't horrendous but nagging. Doctor first thought it was my hip but I don't think it is.

My situation sounds very similar to yours and I live in Columbus, Ohio. Who was your doctor? What did they do for you?

I had Dr Carol Greco and she performed a da Vinci hysterectomy. She left one Ovary as I had to have at least one since I’m on blood thinner for life and hormones are not an option. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. She listened and was an absolute joy to have as my dr. I wish you luck. I’m 4 years post and I couldn’t be happier! Even if a hysterectomy is not what you want, She’s a great doctor.

Thank you for getting back to me, I truly appreciate it! I am going to see if she accepts my insurance and go from there. Why do you have to be on a blood thinner if you don’t mind me asking? I am glad it all worked out for you!

I'm 41 and a couple days before my period and during my period I have the worst pain in my right hip. It feels like it's in the bone it hurts so bad. I started noticing it about 6 months ago. It doesn't feel like it's in the muscle it feels deeper than that. Does anyone know what this is or have experienced the same thing?

Hi ladies
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I wonder how you all are? Any updates?
I am 45 & experiencing pain in my right groin area, it started in the middle of my tummy but now it a sharp pain where you’d find your appendix (which has already been removed) I know I am the right age for perimenopause symptoms, could this be related I wonder?
