I was prescribed mebeverine for gallstones/IBS type symptoms.

I have these attacks of pain every 3-6 months so was told to take them 30 mins before a meal during attacks ie. not the rest of the time when I'm fine.

The question I have is should the mebeverine help straight away or does it have a cumulative effect and have to be taken for a certain amount of time to feel the benefits?

I've been taking it since yesterday when an attack started and TBH it doesn't seem to be working as I'm in real pain again now .

I took it for IBS and don't think it did a lot. I think it is quite quick acting as it acts on the gut before the food reaches it i.e. calms spasms. Sorry I can't be more positive about it.

Thanks bigpigeon.

I was OK this morning after breakfast and semi-OK after lunch but this evening it didn't seem to help at all.

Eating little and often helped me. Are you having your biggest meal at night? Peppermint tea after the meal sometimes was soothing but I wouldn't say it was a cure. Avoiding caffeine and other stimulants helped, including chocolate for a bit. Meditation helped me, but it can take years to get the hang of. Try to fit in some chill out time if you can. Tension made mine worse. Hope you find a way that works for you.

I was prescribed it also for IBS symptoms and it didn't really help. It's a muscle relaxant so should have worked in theory but in practice, no. Was prescribed a range of things over the years including peppermint capsules. Hmm

I did similar things to bigpigeon but also avoided wheat and gluten for a while and also went to see a homeopath. Over the course of about 6 months these things did for me what GPs couldn't do in 10 years. Am never bothered by it now.

Rooibos tea is v good for spasms by the way. Much better than peppermint I found.

It used to work for me, but only if I took it at first twinge or as a pre-emp after a spicy meal etc. Once pain had set in it took days to shift it.

Colofac works well for me now.

Thanks everyone.

I'm feeling OK this morning, even after having breakfast. I also took pain killers last night to help.

I wish I knew what was going on - my symptoms are your classic gallstones symptoms but when I've had scans they have never shown any gallstones/gall bladder problems. However the scans are never during an attack so I do wonder what an scan in the midst of all the pain would show.

I saw a gastro who said its likely to be IBS where the gut is going into spasm, hence prescribing the mebeverine (Buscopan did nothing). Interestingly I don't get any of the constipation, diarrhoea or any other poo related symptoms, just the pain.

Can anyone tell me why Colofac worked for 3-4 days then stopped working?
