Experiences of 2nd opinions?

I've just seen my GP to ask for a second opinion after receiving a very surprising and unwelcome diagnosis on Friday. They agreed that it would be a good idea and have booked me an appointment at another hospital next month. I've never had an experience of asking for a second opinion before and was wondering if anyone would care to share their experience so I have some idea of what to expect. Do they look at what the first doctor said as their reference point or do they start again from scratch just using test results and what you say? Thanks!

I've had recent experience of going for a second opinion. The doctor did all of his own tests and examinations, and took a completely new case history. During the discussion I asked him why his opinion differed from my first doctor. Good luck and I hope you get some clarity.

Thanks. It's good to know they might not be using the worst case scenario as a starting point!

They will do all their own examinations, but may get the xrays/imaging from your original hospital and look at them themselves.

If they don't agree, ask why, and whether there is anything that can be done to be more sure

Fab. The original diagnosis was based on what I said. There's still an MRI and EEG to come but they said it wouldn't make any difference if they came back clear Confused The results will be back for the new appointment so at least there will be something to look at.
