Irregular Periods!!

Ok, so i started my periods at 11, and ever since (now 27) i have had irregular periods, for a 3-4 months at a time they may come bang on the date then the other months, i have no period for 5-6 weeks? My period was technically due last monday, so today it is 8 days overdue. I am pretty confident i am not pregnant and this does happen to me often, but the last couple of months have been fairly regular, and now they're tits up again!
WTF!

Does anyone else suffer from this? I'm not overweight, have maybe been a bit stressed but no more than usual and my diet has changed slightly?

Can anyone shed any light on my mysterious period? Which by the way i want to come NOW to get it over and done with!!

Have had irregular periods all my life and in my case the cause is PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).

Two common causes of irregular periods include polycystic ovaries and problems with the thyroid gland. Both of these can be determined through blood tests. Stress I would think is not a factor in your case as this is a long term problem.

If you want to find out why this is happening I would seek medical advice asap.

Hmm i have had blood tests for my thyroid before and they showed nothing, and have had regular scans because i have probs with my pelvis, due to a disability and they have never showed nothing either!?

Sorry to read that you have problems with your pelvis. An internal ultrasound scan would be the best way to determine the state of your uterine cavity and ovaries to see if they are polycystic.

Any blood test that was done say over six months ago should be discounted.
You need up to date test results; your LH and FSH levels need to be tested and compared against one another at the beginning of the cycle. LH and FSH are two very important hormones as they kickstart the ovulation process and if these are awry this will affect periods and make them more irregular (the levels of LH and FSH should be the same).

lisa i agree with AttilaTheMeerkat I would suggest getting your GP to run some blood tests.
I am currently in the same position and like Meerkat says about LH FSH levels that is what has flagged up with me, and i have been diagnosed with PCOS beacuse of the results alongside irregular periods like your saying.
My last few cycles have been 43 days 45 days and now on day 51!!! I am constantly thinking i may be pregnant because of this, and it is totally confusing.
My LH levels came back Higher than my FSH, i had a scan done at my surgery and no cysts were found, but when i got referred to Endocrinologist on friday, she said she doesnt tend to use a scan as diagnosis. Do you suffer from anything else?? Incresed hair growth?? Trouble losing weight ect?

Hmm i think i'll mention it when i'm at the GP and see what he says. I have no increased hair, and i have no problem with weight, just damn things are irregular at the moment, the thing is i had a good 6-7 months upto now where they were coming fairly good and regular and then now i'm on day 38! Def not pregnant even tested myself to be sure!!

I do have Fibromyalgia and Functional weakness and on alot of medications but i don't think they affect periods :(

I just had a full set of general bloods ran in July for something else, and he never mentioned anything. grrr I just want this bloody period to arrive and then i can get myself along to annoy the GP.

It has arrived!!

Last night! So day 38! I'm quite sure when i mentioned it last time, i was told anything between 28-40 days was REGULAR?! But i shall mention it to the GP anyway!
