Yeast intolerance - any advice?

Hi guys

I was diagnosed today with yeast intolerance. It does make sense as looking at the symptoms i have an awful lot of them. However i am a total bread addict and am completely bewildered by the amount of things i have to avoid. Do i really need to avoid things like tomatoes, apples and mushrooms??

I'm have a chat to a nutritionist tomorrow but am feeling a little worried at the restrictions i might but under and that my lack of creativity in the food departments and cravings are going to get the better of me.

Has anyone got any experience of this. Any positive experiences would be great, or just words of advice really

I would prob start on cutting out bread-y stuff (get rice cakes instead or do without), the craving will subside eventually.

The fruit and veg don't actually contain yeast, but usually have naturally-occurring yeasts on their skin. I had to avoid yeast along with other things for an elimination diet and was advised to wash the fruit thoroughly in a bowl using soapy water, or to rinse under a tap, then peel, then rinse again.

Thanks for your advice. I expected I was reacting to bread in some way but I didn't realise how many things yeast was in.

Hi Makingchanges. Can i just ask who diagnosed you and who referred you to a nutritionist? Wouldn't you be better off seeing a dietician?

I'm not being pedantic....just reminded me of the Dara O'Briain quote (which is true btw):

Here's my favorite little fact. If anyone is ever described to you as a nutritionist, just be slightly wary, right? What they're saying may be perfectly true, but "nutritionist" isn't a protected term. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. "Dietician" is the legally protected term. "Dietician" is like "dentist", and "nutritionist" is like "tooth-i-ologist."

Sorry if this sounds wildly unhelpful as i don't know the medical terms but my mum about 5 years ago felt she was having a reaction with yeast products so ent to her doctor after looking up a very old and rarely used medication that helps your body to rid it's self of a build of yeasts in your body.
My mum being french has always loved the red wine so knew 50 yrs of drinking the stuff could of built up in her.
Anyway, doctor obliged and she felt so much better after and went back to 2 bottles of plonk a day (only joking!)
Maybe do some research in to a yeast detox medication??

You can buy (or make) yeast -free soda bread. Check labels for yeast extract - it's in loads of things (V annoying!) Hopefully you'll be able to go back to eating yeast in moderation if you're 'good'. Potato scones are quite like bread btw.
