Why am I having dizzy spells?

MmeLindor. · 01/09/2011 21:38

I had this a couple of years ago, not long before we moved to Geneva actually. And I think just after we moved.

I have weird dizzy spells. Come out of nothing. I feel like my head is weighted. As if there are weights in my forehead. That sounds daft, but that is the only way I can describe it.

When I try to move my head too quickly, I get slight nausea feeling.

It is not all the time, every so often.

Any idea what this could be? And what I can do to stop it?

I get this! Very dizzy today, so will watch this thread with interest.

I've had this..it's called positional vertigo
although it might be anything else including living on a boat

MmeLindor. · 01/09/2011 21:54

Well, I don't live on a boat so that rules that one out.

Off to google positional vertigo.

I agree, it could be benign positional vertigo. I get it occasionally, when I move my head in particular ways. Unloading the dishwasher seems to be quite a culprit! There is a manoeuvre that an osteopath can do on you to alleviate it, but it has to be done during the middle of an attack, I seem to remember.

I get that too. No idea what it is though. Are you prone to ear infections at all?

Report
privateprancer · 01/09/2011 22:27

I think I get that too, like feeling that I'm falling (like you do when you're in bed), then it goes away..

Itsnot when I do something. Or not always. Sometimes I am just sitting there.

Not prone to ear infections and not got cold at the moment

Sometimes a sympton of anemia. Whatever it might be, get it checked out with the doctor, dont ignore symptons

Anaemia is a good point, I am prone to that, particularly around the time of my period.

Will make an appointment on Monday. Thanks.

Go and see a doctor....

It's impossible for us to pinpoint exactly what the problem is.

Report
MmeLindor. · 02/09/2011 13:45

I know, Sausagesandmarmalade (that is a weird combo, do you eat that?)

It has only been a few days and I don't want to go to the doc for nothing. I have had these dizzy spells a few times over the years and the docs have never found a reason. That is why I posted on MN, in case anyone recognised the symptoms.

I will try iron over the weekend and see the doc next week if not better.

Thanks.

Mmelindor

I haven't eaten 'that' since boarding school breakfasts....but in all seriousness, it is not a bad combination.

It's a ridiculous name obviously (but then so many others are too!)....but the first thing that popped into my head when I decided on a new name.

As for the docs. They are there to reassure us and get us back to good health....and your symptoms are obviously concerning to you.
Could well be anaemia....or any other thing, but unless you have tests for these things they won't pinpoint the source of the problem.

GPs can be a pain as they only have 10 mins to see you....and I know that sometimes I feel really rushed. But your health is the most important thing to you.....and you deserve to have any probs sorted out. Often we worry that we have something serious...when in reality it's something that can be quite easily treated.

you are right, of course (with regard to the doctor, if not your strange food combinations) and I will go to the doc on Monday if it is not better.

I am always reluctant to go here, but I have finally found a good English speaking doc (am abroad).

I get dizzy spells too, with that falling forward feeling and have seen my gp about it with little success at finding out why. I have tried a few different tablets - Stugeron, Betahistines and Stemetil and none of them have worked. I am on statins though, which can cause dizziness but experimenting with being off those, or different doses and different brands have been a bit inconclusive, particularly as the dizziness is not there all the time.

What I do wonder though, is whether it is age related as it appears from my ( rather slapdash ) online research into dizziness, that it can be a symptom of menopause. Don't know whether you are also. like me a woman of 'an age' ( i.e on the turn!) and that it could be a hormonal thing.

Wine
Hmm, I am only 38yo but I suppose it could be the first signs. I have had more irregular periods over the past year or two and get nauseous around my period. Hmm.

Could also be blood pressure? Definitely go to your GP.

(Unless it's the wine, of course?!)

I had this for quite a while and after investigations for positional vertigo, ear problems and lots of other things was finally diagnosed with an under active thyroid. Worth considering and is a simple blood test. Definitely go to your doctor.

oooh, I could blame my weight gain on an underactive thyroid, could I not? Tempting.

Off to google that.

I wouldnt google for anything. The symptons we all get can be very similar and have completely different diagnoses. You get yourself worked up that you have this that the other wrong with you and when you get the results you are completely off the mark.

So many serious and minor illnesses have similar symptons. The internet is a dangerous place and you just get yourself worked up over nothing.

Don't worry, imseeingstars. I was joking.

I am not one to google symptoms. If thr dizzy spells continue I've thr weekend I will go to the doc on Monday
