Am I going to get sick bug from inadvertently eating old off bacon?

So stupid. I cooked some bacon at lunchtime as I had some left over from yesterday. Thought it was a pain that there were only 3 bits rather than the 4 I thought were left and that it didn't look as fresh and pink as it did but thought it was only 36 hours old since open so just made it anyway as I was in a hurry.

All was fine until this evening I ask dh where the ham he bought was - and discover it was sitting on top of the bacon I should have cooked for lunch Sad Shock hiding it from view.

Which means the other bacon is one that I should have thrown out at least a week ago before we went on holiday but didnt get around to as it was all very last minute and chaotic and that if it wasn't looking nice and pink as I was expecting then it really was very well past it's best.

So am I likely to get some nasty sick lurgy? What does bacon tend to carry - will it be something that will hit dh and I tonight or one of the nasty ones that tales a few days to get into the system?

Thanks in advance; am already feeling a bit green and icky but that could easily just be a worried imagination and the after effects of a holiday that's left me over exhausted!

isn't it so salty it's almost preserved? a bit like eating parma ham raw or something?

Sure you'll be fine ....I think you'd know by now if you weren't .

ach, with bacon you'll be fine. If it wasn't green and furry, or it didn't smell very 'off' then there'll be no problem

Bacon is cured - unless it was actually growing stuff you should be fine

Don't think it was furry but was definitely a bit slimy and had that kind of greeny glow that bacon can sometimes have exceptore than I've seen usually.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance though, was thinking that if I had topic up something out of date and off that bacon was probably going to be better than something like chicken! I was ok until dh on being told started panicking about bacon being really bad! Knew that MN would set my mind to rest Grin

The green glow just means in has oxidised. TBH food poisoning usally starts within 8 hours of eating it so you would know by now!

Thanks Hannah - never knew why (until now!) it turned green!

However I think there are some bugs that do take longer than 8 hours to come out - the classic one I seem to remember is campylobacter which takes about 5 days. Apparently it often peaks around New Year's Day - people who have eaten left over turkey that has been left out for too long after Christmas is usually the prime suspect - but because they assume it was something they ate a few hours earlier they don't realise the actual cause.

And - touch wood - we're both OK so far so hoping that that stays the case!
