Allergic reaction to earrings?

I have worn earrings for years with no problems till about a year ago when they started to bother me. Havent put any in for a few months and just tried. Straight away they began to feel irritating and my ear lobes have gone red and swollen.
I am 37. Is it possible to develop a late allergy?

could be a nickel allergy. Do you find the metal bit on watch straps irritating?

I developed an 'intolerance' to earrings - I used to be able to wear any, but now I can only wear solid gold or solid silver. Gets expensive!!

By the way, regs on nickel content in jewellery have been changed in the last few years, so there is a much lower level now permitted.

Your ears may be sore this time because the holes had started to close up, and forcing an earring through irritated them.

i have this problem.

it didn't matter what metal they were made of as soon as i put them in my ears would go very red and feel all burny and swell up and go pussy.

ihaven't worn them for years now and suffered in silence when i had to wear them as a bridesmaid.

Going slightly ot, my dd showed me the top of her arm and shoulder on sunday afternoon. Omg she had the biggest hives (well after googling thats what they lookd like). The only thing we could come up with was Almond oil, although she had only used it on her face and that was fine. She had also eaten an almond flapjack. I didnt know she was allergic to anything.

Thanks for replies. No, I dont think it's because of forcing hole open as the same reaction occured in the last few months of far more frequent wear. They are irritating to wear and swell up and go red after less than 5 minutes of wearing them.
Nickel on my watch is fine.

I find that with Claires cheap earrings. I go for silver usually which are fine.
But I have to wear my engagement and wedding ring separately otherwise I get swelling and itching. Separately they're fine.

You can try painting the earing backs etc with clear nail polish to seal the metal, this used to work for me as a child. Now I just wear silver, which I am fine with. Allergies can develop at anytime though....sorry.

I used to have this problem too but now buy earrings made from medical titanium or surgical stainless steel. They are great and I am enjoying wearing pretty earrings again. Try delicateearrings.co.uk
