Does anyone use a dental nightguard?

For a while my jaw on one side has clicked really badly when I fully open my mouth. This is due to me clenching my jaw at night (often its also to do with teeth-grinding in your sleep but I just do the clenching).

My dentist has been keeping an eye on it and as it wasn't getting better has made me a dental night guard just to use overnight to break the habit.

The first couple of nights I took it out after 10 minutes as I was just so conscious of it as it felt strange. The last 2 nights I've managed to go off to sleep with it in but have taken it out when I've woken at about 4am.

I just wondered if anyone else has had one and want to ask if it worked? Also how long did it take you to get used to it?

DoomBar thanks for replying. Its reassuring to know that it helped with your clicking jaw.

Last night I must have removed it in my sleep or when half awake as I woke up around 2am and it wasn't it my mouth. I had a brief moment of panic thinking I'd swallowed it before I realised that was highly unlikely Grin and found it stored back in its little box. Anyway popped it back in and slept with it in til this morning

Bump for anyone else?

Also, the gum area (sort of under my tongue and to one side) and also the side of my tongue is a bit sore from rubbing on the edge of the guard.
Will I get used to this or does it need trimming or something?

My Mum has had one for years and it stays in throughout the night. It's really helped her, she doesn't get the clicking jaw whilst chewing or the headaches anymore.

Mine fits perfectly but took a bit of getting used to. It's really made a difference to my jaw tho! If its uncomfortable, go back to your dentist to have It checked.

I would go and get it checked, I have one, and although it feels weird, it isn't uncomfortable.

I clench.and used to wake up with awful headaches, and also managed to crack 2 teeth, one of which snapped in two! The mouthguard has really helped, but unfortunately I also do it during the day, and I can't work out a way around this!

Thanks everyone.

I'm going to persevere for a bit and if its still rubbing I'll go back.

It seems to fit perfectly overall but I think the rubbing is where I'm moving my tongue out of the way but, as I'm conscious of the mouthguard when I do it, I keep doing it again IYSWIM (its like when you have bitten your cheek and you keep poking it with your tongue even though it hurts!)

I've had one after I started noticing that I clenched my teeth in the night after having a crown fitted. I'd had morning headaches for years. I find it very good and perfectly comfortable so think yours maybe just hasn't been made properly.

I do one one problem though any ideas I've tried soaking it in sterilising solution, cleaning with toothpaste and even using mouthwash and it still smells iffy. paranoid it's giving me bad breath. It's sort of covered with limescale. If anyone knows what to do about this I'd be grateful.

I did have one for a while as I was grinding my teeth in the night - but the dog ate it. Very common, the dentist says...! Blush

I have one for teeth grinding (I have cracked 2 molars in teeth that had no fillings! - my dentist was aghast!), I actually used to spit it out in the night and find it somewhere in the bed, however now I find it hard to sleep without it Blush. I love it, mind you if I didn't wear it I would have isshoos! I have already chewed my way through it and it is quite solid resin Blush x2

Well I'm just about used to it now although I have the odd occasion where I wake up and can't find it.

Eventually it turns up under the pillow or I'm lying on it.
