aw sorry KK - you know I jest
Please may I rant for a bit ?
ok- so i have illustrated the two books for 8 and 9 year olds and usually I get a share (50% -generally,sometimes less) of the Public Lending Rights payments -these are small but add up and provide a very welcome bonus in February -about £150 roughly. Anyway, deadline is 30th June so I enter the two books but first of all email the author to say that I'm doing so - see below:
Hi- Gaby has sent me your email address -just wanted to ask whether it'd be
ok with you to share the PLR for the two new books ? I have to register by
30th June so am anxious to get on..hope that'll be alright with you. Have
given the books to several 8 year olds who have been delighted.
kind regards
Jane
to which I get the following response:
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to decline your request. We (my wife, who
co-wrote the book with me, and I) are grateful to you for your excellent
illustrations but this is a high-concept book which, surprisingly, took us
many years to get off the ground and so we don't want to share any of the
upside.
Very best wishes,
I feel incredibly peed off because he is a hugely successful author/writer etc with many very popular books under his belt...am thinking of sending the following response- would appreciate your opinions:
I'm sorry to hear that because PLR payments, though small, make a bit of a difference to my modest income and I hope you'd agree that my illustration really helps the book along. Perhaps you haven't read this part on the PLR website ? (and here I have copied from the website) .....
How do I know if i'm eligible?
To qualify for PLR in a book you should be named on its title page or be entitled to a royalty payment from the publisher (but you do nothave to own the copyright). When two or more contributors are involved they must divide the PLR between them. This is done on the basis of percentage shares which they must agree before applying for registration.
Every contributor named on the title page of a book needs to be consulted when agreeing percentage shares and the agreed division should reflect contribution. Each eligible contributor may then submit a separate application. The following types of contributor must be taken into account:
Writers - share to reflect contribution
Illustrators/photographers - share to reflect contribution even if paid by fee
kind regards
