Look at us, all stars. Which of course we are. Wink

You're right about the heat in London, Topsy. I am officially a wet lettuce. Even cake seems wrong today, so it must be hot. Grin

hello all - groovy title MAS - how lovely Smile

Good luck to Pink with her chemo today, and to Topsy fr appointments later this week, also MAS at the Gp's today.

Shock at drama at the camping Cakes - how awful for the poor woman Sad

You are right about the heat Smee - wet lettuce status here too Grin Good luck with counting the pennies (have you got any anti-bac hand wash? Grin)

Well I had a great time at the festival yesterday. Rod Stewart was brilliant - great show. And Stevie Nicks was phenomenal too. Adam Ant is a slightly middle-aged-highwayman-with-glasses these days, and rather bitter still that he only got one song at Live Aid Grin - but he was pretty good.

I managed to get a bit burned on a bit of my shoulder I'd missed with the sunscreen. - However the sun seems to have helped the impetigo. I will try to sort some pics later. I am sooo tired didn't get home until 2,.30 a.m. and just collapsed into bed. But it was a great day - made me feel young again Smile

The dog has just discovered half a packet of rather nice lemon biscuits in my bag and helped herself to them - grrr.- little old pig-dog.

Cakes, that camp sounds like a Mike Leigh play. That poor woman though. What a prat to choose the school camp to tell her.

Kurri, yeay for feeling young. Smile Grin at pig dog. Our cat ate a plate full of biscuits last week. I didn't think cats did that. Confused

Money all counted and banked. Have disinfected our kitchen table. Mostly sweaty pennies, though the Potters Wheel confused me - couldn't work out what it was, but all the coins were covered in clay. Grin

kk - laughing at your pig/dog . I think his brother might live in my house . I have never known an animal like it for begrudging every sweet thing that goes in my mouth !
He is like an animal dietary aid , cos I can't help sharing !

Bit sad re Adam . Always sad when an idol doesn't live up to your memories Sad

Too hot for cake ?
Now that's sad !

BTW , finally got my other foots toenails painted !

And how sad is that ? Breaking up with your wife at a camping holiday , with other friends with you ?
What a shitty thing to do !

aw sorry KK - you know I jest Grin
Please may I rant for a bit ?
ok- so i have illustrated the two books for 8 and 9 year olds and usually I get a share (50% -generally,sometimes less) of the Public Lending Rights payments -these are small but add up and provide a very welcome bonus in February -about £150 roughly. Anyway, deadline is 30th June so I enter the two books but first of all email the author to say that I'm doing so - see below:

Hi- Gaby has sent me your email address -just wanted to ask whether it'd be
ok with you to share the PLR for the two new books ? I have to register by
30th June so am anxious to get on..hope that'll be alright with you. Have
given the books to several 8 year olds who have been delighted.
kind regards
Jane

to which I get the following response:

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to decline your request. We (my wife, who
co-wrote the book with me, and I) are grateful to you for your excellent
illustrations but this is a high-concept book which, surprisingly, took us
many years to get off the ground and so we don't want to share any of the
upside.
Very best wishes,

I feel incredibly peed off because he is a hugely successful author/writer etc with many very popular books under his belt...am thinking of sending the following response- would appreciate your opinions:

I'm sorry to hear that because PLR payments, though small, make a bit of a difference to my modest income and I hope you'd agree that my illustration really helps the book along. Perhaps you haven't read this part on the PLR website ? (and here I have copied from the website) .....

How do I know if i'm eligible?

To qualify for PLR in a book you should be named on its title page or be entitled to a royalty payment from the publisher (but you do nothave to own the copyright). When two or more contributors are involved they must divide the PLR between them. This is done on the basis of percentage shares which they must agree before applying for registration.

Every contributor named on the title page of a book needs to be consulted when agreeing percentage shares and the agreed division should reflect contribution. Each eligible contributor may then submit a separate application. The following types of contributor must be taken into account:

Writers - share to reflect contribution
Illustrators/photographers - share to reflect contribution even if paid by fee

kind regards

MAS - Angry for you, I think your e-mail is fine (and remarkably polite considering his pompous reply to your first one) He's got a real nerve not wanting to include you in the PLR. - Your excerpt shows you are completely entitled to it. I hope he doesn't mess about so that you miss the deadline.

Report
topsyturner · 27/06/2011 13:07

MAS - that is a really shitty email that the author sent to you . What you have copied and pasted regarding the "rules" makes it perfectly clear that this is a normal thing for you to have requested .

He is clearly in the wrong here , and I think sending him that email with the guidelines pointed out to him is entirely appropriate .

smee · 27/06/2011 13:09

Ooh MAS, that's absurd and petty. Have had similar with things I do and it winds me up no end. I think your e-mail's excellent. Press send and if they fail to relent, we'll have to think of a suitable bit of revenge..

Mange! Grin

If you can , I would just send off for it . Stuff him and his penny pinching rudeness Angry

oh thank you- I sent a copy to my editor and she said to send it,but ominously warned me to brace myself for his reply...
it was pompous wasn't it - the book,as Cakes will testify if just a series of facts and figures which,in my humble opinion would be as uninteresting as dust to children were it not for my enhancements (which I meticulously researched so that all the costumes for historical stuff etc are accurate and the bit of A level maths in one illustration is completely correct - I am obsessive about accuracy, even in light hearted things,it's important)
Also I don't get royalties -just a one-off fee. what a knob

sorry- rant over for now.

What is that stupid, self satisfied git talking about? What's a high concept book?

It's as MAS says, a series of facts. Dd loved it but I'm stumped as to what is high concept about it. ANd I think the pictures make it, actually!!!

I absolutely hate the pompous twit's reply. And it is dishonest to register it as 100% for himself if he is obliged to consult first. What a prat. Angry He is just trying to ride roughshod over you on the assumption that it won't be worth taking him to the small claims court or whatever the process is. He is a complete arse.

Hope you get on OK at the GP's MAS.

KK - I am glad you had a good bop around to Adam et al. it can take years of you, can't it? Smile

It is extremely mean spirited of him, and I can't bear that either. My Dad would have said he was the type who wouldn't give you the drippings off his nose. Grin

I have observed that it is usually those who can well afford to be generous who are the worst.

And I still think he is an arse.
