Can certain foods give you the shits even though they don't cause you any other symptoms of intolerance?

I love peanut butter. I am not in the slightest allergic to nuts - I eat them all the time. But since I bought a jar of pb a few weeks back I have realised that I get the runs within 30 mins of eating some. I coudln't work out what was causing it before but I had a lightbulb moment this morning! It has to be the pb - there is no other common factor.

Anyone experienced this? Or am I imagining it?

Yes!!

From personal experience it's wholemeal bread. I can eat anything with Wheat, Bran , Oats, Seeds you name it but bloody Wholemeal bread has me in pieces.

Terrible pain and 24 hours on the loo.

According to the GP it's just one of those things!

Ooh interesting. I went through a phase of that - reacting to any kind of wheat a few years ago. I took myself off wheat for a while but was able to reintroduce it again gradually. I don't eat that much bread now but I do eat pasta - so I don't think it can be wheat again.

Peanuts have me running to the loo within an hour.
As do onions and occasionally, garlic, especially when I'm premenstrual.

DH eats peanuts - peanut butter occasionally, roasted/salted nuts, nutty chocolate etc with no problem at all. Last night he refused to eat a monkey nut cos he says they give him the shits. Even though they're the same freaking thing

Shop bought tiramisu. Proper homemade is okay but they must put something in the chilled desserts that sets me off. A friend gets the same thing too with it.

So I am not the only one with the selectively fussy gut.

Bad again this morning though and no peanuts eaten Hmm

Pork and most red meats and it can take a while to "calm" down again after a bout.

Have you had a recent infection Orm? This can trigger off or cause allergies to recur (clasps recent BBC Science Mag to bosom in show offy fashion).

I have the same problem with Pork, particularly if it has been frozen. The rest of the family can have the same meal with no problems but I end up on the loo a couple of hours later. It is not evey time either.

mal- a garlic intolerance (and onion is in the same family) can be due to malabsorbtion of sulphur- you need to eat more legumes to counteract this (eg eat french beans with chicken kiev etc) I too have a garlic intolerance! and a hatred of green vegetables

I find sometimes it is the fat content which makes something go through me quickly IYSWIM.

That's interesting , the only green veggies I eat, are peas!

I can't eat cauliflower or cucumber either.

Yes to high fat stuff too, if I have a mcdonalds burger, that goes straight through me.

Thankfully I can eat copious amounts of chocolate.

No recent infection thankfully. my DC have had a vomiting bug but I'v been fine.

Re the fat thing - when my mum's gall bladder was going into meltdown she couldn't deal with fat in any form.

Ha, you could have got a subclinical version of it Orm and not suffered any outward symptoms but still triggered off a t-cell response.

Weetabix does this to me. Also, I find that the day after I eat nuts I tend to be a bit more 'loose' than normal. Sorry for tmi
