Bunion surgery - a good idea?

My bunion is getting more and more painful as I get older. I will probably end up one of those old ladies with big toes that cross over the other ones.
Everyone I've spoken to who has had bunion surgery before has remained in some pain afterwards and said it was a huge faff to have to hobble around on crutches for a while and not drive etc. Don't think I can face it with dc's.
Anyone got any positive bunion healing experiences? Or glad they had the surgery?

I had a scarfe osteotomy (effectively a bunion removal) and had absolutely no pain at all, and the crutches were a PITA and I didn't bother with them after a couple of days (just used my heel to walk on). The only problem I had was the painkillers making me feel sick, so I stopped taking them after a couple of days and found I didn't need them.

I don't drive though.

I do have loss of sensation in part of my big toe now, although that might be down to the soft tissue release they did further along my foot.
