Kidney infection getting worse on antibiotics

I am on my last day of antibiotics (5 day course) for a kidney infection and the pain is still intense, it's also moved from the right side to the left! I was wondering if anone knows should the antibiotics have worked by now, if they were going to work?

I do fret a lot, I take daily calcium for a busted parathyroid gland and levels are monitored to ensure no kidney damage. I can see my mind wondering into E coli territory soon. Blush

which antibiotics are you taking? I was prescribed nitrofurantoin for a kidney infection by the GP and I had to tell her that nitro isn't effective against kidney infections only bladder infections Hmm

I'd return to the doctor and ask for some alternative antibiotic - I was prescribed Ciprofloxacin for mine. You obviously need something more potent. Never be worried about challenging doctors. It's your body and you'd be surprised at how thick some of them actually are (I have insider knowledge Wink)

Thanks branflakesareboring, I'm on 400mg, ofloxacin. Apparantly it's used to treat Gonnoreah! (sp) and lung disease so i think it's heavy duty. Only one a day.

I know what you mean about challenging them. I just discovered, without their help, that the amatriptyline i was prescribed for three years was toxic to me and don't really trust doctors after almost dying post thryoidectomy and negligence.

I really thought I would be feeling less pain by now. Will ring them.

If the antibiotics were going to be effective they'd have lessened the pain by now. You shouldn't be feeling this bad after taking them for that length of time.

Get 'em told. Good Luck Smile

Branflakes is right - if they were going to help they would have started working by now. Go back to your GP.

The last time I had a kidney infection I was also prescribed Cipro and it had started to work within 24 hours. Having said that, I was under the direct care of a consultant at the time for related issues and he also juggled with the various other drugs I was taking.

Thanks IslandMoose. That's what was worrying me, the amount of other drugs I take for Graves disease, Fibrimyalgia and then these. Maybe they have cancelled out the effectiveness of the antibiotics. Am going back tomorrow morning.

I did feel an improvment the first day but then the pain shifted to the other side. Confused God, am sick being sick.

Poor you - kidney infections are painful enough without those other afflictions! Hope you get it sorted out soon.

Well, I rang the surgery and was asked to drop in another sample. I did and was told the lab results would be back Friday Shock I almost collapsed in fear, told the receptionist I didn't think I could handle three more days of this pain. Ten minutes later the nurse rang and said she tested the sample and was clear of urine infection. I said great, but does that also show there is no kidney infection anymore? She didn't really know, said it could mean that. I have to still wait on lab results but go back down to GP tomorrow if pain worsens.

I now wonder if my fibromyalgia, which increases sensitivity to pain, is responsible for me still feeling every twinge of the almost gone kidney infection Confused

Tramadol it is then. Sad

Still in agony. Saw gp yesterday, sample has lots of blood and protein and pelvis is inflamed. Now on ten day course of Ciprofloxacin, 500mg, twice a day! Started them yesterday and pain is worse today.

Next stop, a stun gun. Sad

Hi there. I know this was a few years ago but I have similar symptoms to you with kidney pain etc. they gave me amoxicillin first which seemed to clear it but it came bk after 2 days! Tried keflex fr 3 days made me worse! Now on trimethoprim it's improved a bit but twinges in kidneys and stinging wee are still bothering me. :(. Just wonders what you found got rid of yours in the end? I've not tried cipro or nitro as yet. Thanks. Liz

i have had 2 kidney infections now, one at 22 weeks and one now at 24 wks. i was given trimethoprim both times and both times they have cleared within a couple days.

But im so so worried about it causing preterm labour or if i am prone to them and might get another one. Has anyone else had more than 1 kidney infection? I just dont know what im doing wrong
