Anyone taken Diazepam for anxiety?

kuckingfunt · 21/02/2011 13:53

Doctor has just precribed these to me. I haven't picked up prescription yet but has just given me a few days worth to take along with some other anti d's that he says will take a couple of weeks to kick in. He has given me the diazepam to take so they kick in immediately while waiting for the others to take effect.

I have never taken any medication like this and am a bit scared if I am honest.

Has anyone taken them? Do they work? What are the side effects?

They allow you to feel more relaxed and able to cope with stuff. You may or may not feel a little bit sleepy depending upon how stressed you are.

Antidepressants are better, but you'll be fine on the diazepam 'til they kick in. They don't really have much in the way of side effects.

Ok, got my precription now. I have been given Paroxetine to take with them. I am so scared of taking them (after reading the leaflet)! I know this is mad and its the unknown because I have never taken anything like this before.

most of the leaflets have a lot of scary shit on them, but its helpful to remember that reactions are rare, and treatable if they occur. You have been given these meds presumably for a good reason and the huge likelihood is that they will help you rather than harm you.

It is scary taking meds like these for the first time, but think about the fact that they may well make you feel much better. Smile

Ive taken them for anxiety, i found them to be fab, but was getting worried that i would become dependant on them, so stopped taking them.

They seriously do help with stress and anxiety, but arnt usually given willy nilly as they are very addictive. I would suggest you only take them when you need them.

The only side effects i had with them were slightly stumbly, like i was drunk, and slurring my words abit. But apart from that they were great when i needed them.

I stopped taking them a round a month ago.

Oh yes, and you shouldnt drink alcohol with them!

No alcohol?! Ok then. Can you drink with the Paroxetine?

I would NOT drink with seroxat (paroxetine).

I speak from personal experience.

I hope kucking knows what I mean when I say that I'm glad to hear that you've got these Smile

Have no experience of either (was on fluoexetine myself).

I used to be on Paroxetine and I used to have a drink. Not enough to become drunk, just a small amount on an evening. Didn't have any problems.

One or two small drinks are fine on the meds.

But if you like your bottle of wine of a weekend, you are liable to get pissed very very quickly and suffer horrendous hangovers-it won't help your anxiety/depression.

If you are using your diazepam, why would you feel the need for a glass of wine?

Try taking your diazepam in bed tonight and see how you feel on it.

Dont suppose anyone knows if I can take my Serc tablets too with these - forgot to ask doctor - I am taking them for dizziness.

Yes Baroque, I know what you mean, I may cheer up a bit now!

I dont drink at the moment anyway so it shouldnt be a problem.

I am really really scared of taking the diazepam tonight - I really couldnt cope at all with feeling any worse at the moment.

god that makes me sound like I think you're a grumpy cow Blush

Not that you'll cheer up - but you'll at least feel a bit mentally better Smile

I took diazepam for anxiety years ago - made me really sleepy and def more relaxed- have you got anyone around tonight if you take one?

Have also taken paroxetine for years - has worked wonders with my anxiety - literally a life saver and has always kicked in quite quickly for me ( have also drunk more than I should have on more than one occasion whilst on them - Thingumy has now helped me understand why I feel SO rubbish the next day Smile).

Well done for doing something about how you feel - is your dr arranging any talking therapy type thing as well?

2mg is a minimal dose kucking.

I've taken valium and tamazepam (5mg-10mg) in the past (for insomnia and anxiety) and have felt better for it.My panic certainly subsided and my mind was able to be calm. You may feel a bit sleepy or like your limbs are slightly heavy but it won't be anything to fear.

I would have a nice bath and get into bed a bit earlier and take your diazepam.

I'm sure some of us will be around later if you feel a bit anxious Smile

Try not to worry (very easy to say,I know!)

kuckingfunt · 21/02/2011 19:33

I've had a bath and might take it in about an hour before going off to bed.

I am stupidly scared about it! I know its only because I havent had them before and they are probably not going to affect me with such a small dose.

Thanks Thingumy, I'm sure I will be here if anything horrible happens.

I think the ones I have been prescribed today are part of the same group as Diazepam.

Are they Fab? I am to take 3 a day or 'as' required. Hope you get on ok with yours.

Can you just take them when you feel like you need them rather than take 3 everyday?

Thanks Baby - so you took 10mg at once?! I should be ok then with 2 mg.

BabyBorn · 21/02/2011 20:09

Yes, 10mg at once! I would take them as required, you dont want to end up rattling and becoming dependant on them!

kuckingfunt · 21/02/2011 20:13

Right, just taken my very first one...eeek! I am so anxious about other stuff anyway and now i am panicking about taking this tablet!

I guess what your gp is trying to do is lower your anxiety levels before your AD's kick in.

The 3 a day is probably the optimized dose to help quell your anxiety.I think the effects of diazepam wear off after 5 hours so if you took them 3 times a day you could be achieving 15 hours of being anxiety free.

I think only you can decide on whether you need a 'constant' dose right now.

I found my anxiety levels were high first thing upon waking and last thing at night,it's a common pattern.
