VERY heavy but VERY short periods ...

For the last year or so, my very average periods have changed.

What used to happen in 5 or 6 days now happens in 2. The flow is therefore very very heavy (I could not actually leave the house yesterday), and I feel utterly exhausted and light headed for the first 24 hours.

The only upside is that its all over within 48 hours (it stops dead, no petering out either).

I have noticed the few days before I am an emotional wreck too!

I am 42 and on no contraception, and I am controlled hypo-thyroid.

Am I peri menopausal or is this something weird? Its really leaves me feeling so rough afterwards.

Any ideas please?

Sorry i don't know anything about being peri menopausal.
I just wanted to say that there are some tablets you can get from your gp that should help lessen the bleeding. Although as its over so quickly it may not be enough time to work.
I have extremely heavy periods but the heavy bleeding lasts for 3-4 days & lighter bleeding for another 2-3 days. I too can't leave the house when my bleeding is heavy.
Hope someone can come along and answer your question.
I think you should see your gp & speak to them & if need be, be referred to see a gyne to check everything is ok.

I would ask your GP to be referred to a gynae for further evaluation.

Any such changes in menstrual cycle should always be mentioned to a gynae. You do not have to put up with this and you've had such a problem for the last year!. These types of problems as well just don't go away on their own.

The cause of the heavy bleeding needs to be properly determined. It may be fibroids that are causing the heaviness of bleed.

Go back and get your bloods checked. I am hyper and have 2 day periods and thats that -though not heavy.

I know this is old thread but can’t find a newer one. Did you find out what the cause was? This has been happening to me too. I have one heavy day, one medium flow day and one that is very light to spotting instead of a 4 to 5 day period with two medium to heavy days, one light and one very light.

This is me but I'm 30. Two days of very light, one heavy then stops dead until the following month.

Duckyfuzzz, has that always been your pattern? How heavy is your heavy day? Mine is generally quite manageable but I can have 1-4 stressful hours.

That is the same as me. Only started using greens for the first time this cycle. Just needed them for about half a day. I wonder if it is related to having kids as mine gradually got like this after my last baby and stopping breastfeeding. Mind you, not all my cycles are like this. I am not sure if I need to tell my gp about this or is just one of those things. Did you speak to a doctor about this? Btw, thanks so much for replying

Nope not seen a GP. I'm not on any contraception as can't tolerate it so it's just me I think. I wouldn't worry,

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I guess I am worrying too much. I will monitor it and if I feel it is getting heavier then I will see my gp. Heard ibuprofen can reduce flow, might try it next cycle on my heavy day.
