Just under a fortnight ago I noticed what I thought were insect bites inside my buttocks and around my perineum. I had sat outside on the ground the previous evening wearing a tshirt and underpants (southern hemisphere here) and often sleep naked so I thought ant bites or mozzie bites were possible.

Bloody, bloody itchy though. One bite even in the crease between my thigh and vulva.

But the thing is, they're still there. And I can no longer deny that I'm getting the odd new one. The bites are little round dots with a white head I think.

A good look in the mirror, and I think it could be a rash? Or crotch fleas? Do crotch fleas even exist? It's all very red and angry.

Why is this happening to me?

This all coincided precisely with my husband coming home from a few months working away. I have no reason to suspect that he's been unfaithful to me though. And he doesn't have any symptoms of anything himself.

I am too bloody scared to google. And going to the doctor here is not very straightforward, particularly about something like this. I can buy most drugs over the counter if I can self diagnose though.

Any ideas?

I'm a bit scared to be honest. And very, very itchy.

Hope it doesn't fall off.

folliculitis?

Could be thrush. I think you do need to get it checked properly though.

ditto the getting it checked...

it sounds like you got bitten and are still, erm, getting bitten.

Herpes usually makes you feel ill and is more like sores, not little bites...I think. I have never had it so can't be certain!

But I am thinking it is the common crotch flea. if that exists

Not really sure but it could be bed bugs if your DH was working away, they could have hitched a ride home with him. You need to check your mattress, bedding and wall with a magnifying glass for small red spots of blood. Can take a while to appear though. If you have them they are a NIGHTMARE to get rid of. You will have to boil wash everything. Get rid of the mattress if you can and get a fumigator if possible.

Or lice. Of some sort.

Hmmm. I'm almost scared to Google for you. But here are some possibilities.
Are you SURE they're bites, and not just rashy spots?
Candida can give you baboon butt (red horrible looking rash on perineum, inside buttocks and even inside thighs). But it could also be scabies. Madly itchy and looks like little bites.
I'm afraid you are going to have to Google. Good luck!

Could it be something like an allergic reaction to something - non scary link? Have you changed washing powder/bath stuff/something or got new knickers?

Hassled · 01/01/2011 17:29

I've googled Scabies so you don't have to and yes, some of the images look as you describe.

SantasENormaSnob · 01/01/2011 17:35

Could it be a sweat rash?

Folliculitits?

Oh thank fuckity fuck for mumsnet. THANK YOU for caring about my itchy fanjo enough to read and post.

I have had a bit of a cry and a fag in the garden (I don't even smoke) and have been brave enough to google.

Nhs description of genital herpes works, but how on earth did I get it? I have only slept with my husband for the last 6 years. And the google images don't quite match. Genital herpes seems much more blistery than what I have. I can't even decide if my red dots have white heads or not. If they do they are tiny pin prick white heads.

And my red dots a quite sparsely spread out over a bigger area.

Scabies is all wrong from the pictures.

Of course, the big clanging bell in my head is shouting WHAT IF DH PLAYED AWAY???? But I really have no reason to think he did. Except for the unsightly genital rash i got the day after having sex with him for the first time in months.

Don't think sweat rash because there are specific angry red bite things.

Folliculitus also wrong from the pics.

If it is genital herpes, can there be a nice safe, happy reason why I have it?

scabies can be caught from bedding. Herpes can't,

go to a GUM clinic for a diagnosis - it may be sth they can treat.

herpes can remain dormant for years.

EdgarAleNPie · 01/01/2011 17:58

angry red bites doesn't sound like herpes.

Ummmm don't mean to give TMI but your DH doesn't happen to get cold sores and has given you a little 'beaver munch'?

That would do the trick. Oh and for them to pass they are not in the fully formed stage, just the tingling on the lip stage.

Or alternately if you suffer from cold sores, had one and accidently touched your vaginal area after touching one (well one about to appear).

NewYearNewPants · 01/01/2011 18:01

Herpes can lie dormant for years and years. It does not necessarily mean that your DH has been cheating on you. However, it would mean that he also has the virus, and may also get an outbreak at some stage.

The 'angry, red' thing does describe some herpes blisters. They don't look the same in everyone - in some people they are almost whitish little blisters, in other they are weeping sores. Intese itchiness sometimes occurs, and they are usually very, very sore.

Do not ask me how I know all this, we will behere all day! Grin].

Really not good to scare yourself with googling and speculation, though. Go and get checked out by a doctor!

Sounds most unlike herpes. More like folliculitis. If still there, go to your doctor and a prescription for antibiotics. Wearing loose fitting natural fibre clothes on your bottom half will help to make sure it does not come back. Oh, and don't shave down there.

I have had another look at more pics and I am less and less convinced by genital herpes.

Also, eeeeew. Googling pictures of genital herpes is exactly how I hoped my new year would start.

I simply can't think of a doctor I would trust with something like this. It is so different here to at home.

Oh Lordy :( no I bet it wasn't.
Could you say where you are, maybe someone could suggest a course of action?
Or would there be a practice nurse at the GP's office you could talk to? Or a local midwife?

Are you certain DH didn't think to allure you by spraying his bits with 'man-scent' or something, on his return...something that could have caused an immediate violent allergic reaction?

Herpes wouldn't be likely to appear so suddenly I don't think, and you would feel poorly with it being a first outbreak (from what I have read).

I would have thought if you had caught something from DH it would have shown up in him too.

If you're in the southern hemisphere could it be one of those worms that live under your skin. after you've sat on the flies eggs on the ground or something, the eggs hatch and a tiny grub grows under your skin. Sorry I've completely forgotten the name of it - but could this be a possibility - if you're in Africa I'd bet my bottom (sorry bad choice of word) dollar on it.
