Swollen vein in finger - any ideas?

One of the veins in my right ring finger (the palm side) has sort of popped up - it's blue and swollen, very tender and feels a bit hot to touch. I haven't bumped it (afaik). Any ideas of what it might be?

I'm no doctor - sounds like a blockage - have you got a ring on? is it tight?

Nope, no ring on that finger.

Lol at your guitar wasp story, hausfrau - and now I will be studying my finger by the minute to see if the blueness is moving!

No, my finger's not numb, just a bit throbby. Dh just came home for lunch and thinks I should go to the doctor (I told him you can't see deep vein thrombosis).

Something very similar happened to me in my right ring finger, though no ring on it. Blue, swollen vein just above the lower joint. Went to the doctor who said it was very unlikely to be a thrombosis in the finger and even if it was it wouldn't do any harm there. She didn't know what it was, and thought it might be a cyst below the vein, as it felt too hard to be the vein itself. She saw me again in 2 weeks by which time it was still there but less noticeable. She felt it wasn't worth 'excavating' unless it grew, caused pain or otherwise bothered me. This happened months ago and there is still a small lump there but the vein has disappeared. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks for that, singersgirl. The swelling has gone down a bit - but it's still blue. Doesn't hurt as much. I will keep an eye on it.

do you have a GP? It's what they're there for.

It's a lot better thanks, hausfrau - it still hurts a bit if I press on it but the swelling has disappeared.

highlander, I do have a GP. Last time I made a non-emergency appointment I rang on the Thursday and couldn't be seen until the following Wednesday. I didn't really think it counted as an emergency...turned out I was right!

OMG that is so surprising, the very same thing happened to me, looked like I had a swollen blue vein on my left wedding ring finger palm side up, I do have rings but their not tight and it never happened before , didn't hurt it are anything, this was three days ago and It seems to be gone down now, was hoping it doesn't have anything to do with blood circulation, going to my doc in two weeks time will ask then, why it happened .

lalalanger, snap! same thing happened to me today. I'm glad I've found this post. My vein in my left ring finger came up this morning and was hard and blue. I massaged it and it went down during the day, but now I have a bruise on the side of my finger. I have no idea why it came up. I don't wear any rings. At least I know it is unlikely to be Deep vein thrombosis as I have read this usually occures in the leg or lungs.

I have the same thing! Just came up 2 days ago! So weird ~ little bluish, hard bump/knot and it's pretty tender! I didn't hit it on anything. Strange!

So glad to hear I'm not dying! I woke up this morning with the exact same thing on the lower part of the ring finger...sore, nodule-type little vein bulge. In fact, if I bang my hands accidentally, my veins do pop out like this and have in the past. Maybe this is just a symptom of sensitive veins??? I was wondering if there is a supplement to support good veins. Does anyone know?

Hi, i also faced same problem this morning in right hand ring finger on upper joint. My finger starts looking blueish, swelled up and pains at upper part. i am not able to use that finger because of pain. I did hot water therapy after that swelling went away but still it pains. I guess it started paining because i wore tight cuff near my elbow. Please suggest me how can i cure it.

i have the same problem, sometimes in the fingers, sometimes in the toes, even in the heel. I asked my doc, gp and he chalked it up to being thin skin. I don't think that's the problem at all. I see i have one on the side of my lip, although it does not hurt. I'm going to a vein specialist. Will update at that time. I'm afraid I might get one in my lung or heart.
