Mouth ulcer agony! Any advice!

CountessVonKnackerstein · 10/11/2010 19:58

Have one on side of my mouth, been to dentists and she said it's 7mm in diameter!
She's advised to rinse with warm salty water, well I just tried that and I have truly never had pain like that, totally awful. She did say this salty water would help it heal but I think I'll stick with the bonjela.

Any other advice?

The salt water thing does work, but it is a bit kill or cure. Mouth ulcers are horrible, I feel your pain!

I feel your pain I'm suffering at the moment too :(

Adult bonjella, anbusol, corsodyl, paracetamol, and alcohol are taking the edge off it.

I tried one of those snappy cotton but things but it didn't work for me :( (£5.99 too!!)

I've tried a snappy cotton bud thing, that bloody hurts doesn't it! You have to get the angle just right don't you.
My brother used to put surgical spirit on his!

I tired the new Igloo ulcer treatment when my DS had one a while ago. It creates a seal over the ulcer and seemed to heal it quickly.

I have also used it and although it feels a bit wierd in your mouth when it dries, mine was gone quickly.

I read on the internet that some ulcers can last for 3 weeks.

Depressing thought :(

Hot salt water is the only thing that works

You need to do it quite often but it is really effective

I had an ulcer that went from one side of my mouth to the other - right across my lips

Ooh KatyMac that must have been awful! Do you find anything triggers them?

Hardly had any since I gave birth

However from puberty til then they were fairly constant

I had antibiotics & even steroids for them quite often

My 15 year old daughter has suffered with these horrendous mouth ulcers for a few years now. Every other month she would get multiple huge ulcers which would spread on her tongue, cheeks and lips. She could not speak, sleep or eat and would often have to stay off school for up to a fortnight at a time until they healed. She was in agony! Neither her GP nor Dentist could find a reason for them. I have studied various articles and read that steroids help. Eventually after a particularly nasty bout of 12 ulcers and a lot of arguing, her GP has agreed to give her a steroid mouth rinse which she has now used 4 times (1 day). We have woke this morning to a miracle. No bleeding, swollen puss filled mouth! I am amazed and wish I had fought for this years ago and saved her from years of misery. Anyone suffering, like my daughter, please do not take no for an answer from your GP. This really works!

Effervescent vitamin c - wash around your mouth slowly. My mum was given this when she had awful ones in hospital.

I used to suffer with them alot and had a few that were so painful I could barely speak.
The only thing that worked for mine was oraldene but they don't sell it anywhere anymore. I also use Abesol as it numbs it for a while, pound land do it it's called sore mouth gel in there and it's way cheaper. bonjela stings like a bitch or it use to years ago I stopped using it as it made my ulcers worse. Salt water rinses didn't work for me. I went for Listerine blue or green and found it helped with the pain. Also ibuprofen and paracetamol take the edge off too. Also Not sure if they still do them bit superdrug do mouth ulcer pastilles there good but don't taste very nice, soothes the pain a little.
Hope it goes soon I had one for almost 6 weeks .

Hope it is gone for you soon. They make you feel truly miserable. I have suffered for so many years with them! Used to keep a tiny bottle of vodka in my work drawer and swish it around my mouth to numb the pain as it was so bad.
Sad
Also tried the steriod moutwash but for me it is hormonal so now take large dose of folic acid which helps.
