Should we turn the fridge/freezer off while we are away?

We are going away for four weeks and can probably eat everything up before we go (with a bit of effort)-does it make financial sense?

If you can empty your freezer then, by all means, turn it off.

I guess I am worried about a wee bit of food that COULD go to waste. Decisions decisions!

Ask a neighbour if you can put any leftover in their freezer until you get back, then switch it off. Remember to keep the door open or it will smell.

That's a good idea, was thinking of doing that. Just feel a bit silly getting someone to care for some peas, bread and tomato sauce!

I wouldnt. I dont think they are made to be turned on and off. I know 2 people who have done this and had to buy a new one, as the old one wouldnt work any more after being turned off.
I'm not sure how much electric a fridge freezer would use in 4 weeks? maybe £5-10 ish

Good point-I will have to check that out.

Part empty it, turn up thermostat, so its not so cold.
Leave some jars and sauces in the fridge as they work better part full.

Any idea what temp to set it at?

Waltzywotzy Sat 25-Oct-08 20:05:02

I think the temp goes from 5 coldest to 1 warmest on a fridge, so I'd put it at 2 to keep it ticking over.

jobschmob Sat 25-Oct-08 20:10:58

Ours has actual temps on it-have just checked and ours is at 6 degrees at the moment, the only warmer temp is 8 degrees, so maybe we'll go that route. Put freezer from minus 18 to minus 16??

I would read the manual

sorry no help after that, but I would not mess with the freezer if you have stuff you want to eat in it when you get back. I will not offer a refund for the food that is ruined, if my advice is crap.

Don't worry-I take full responsibility for my actions! Will have a look for the instructions and stop being so lazy!
